Douglas Lloyd Spurr, “Doug”, age 73, peacefully passed away on September 18, 2019 at his home in Casa Grande, Arizona. He was born on February 10, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan to Thomas Lloyd and Lillian Ethel Spurr.
He was the 6th of 12 children and was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lillian; brothers, William, Lloyd, and David; sister, Joyce; and eldest son, Douglas “Doug”.
Doug is survived by his ex-wife, Jullia; son and daughter-in-law, Donald “Don” and Barbara; daughter, Charlene; granddaughters Rebecca, Bethany (Don and Barbara), Paige, and Kendra (Charlene); and daughter-in-law, Sandra. He is also survived by his brothers; Donald and Thomas; and sisters, Elizabeth, Phyllis, Sharon, Pamela, and Rhonda, along with several nieces and nephews.
He proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army. Doug married Jullia Ann Ely on April 6th 1976, later divorcing but remaining close throughout his life. She was his primary caregiver, by his side with their two children, Don and Charlene, surrounding him with love and comfort when he peacefully passed. Doug was a truck driver who retired after more than 30 years with the Teamsters and moved to California for several years before ultimately settling into retirement in Arizona.
He was many things to many people; husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, father-in-law, and friend, and the absolute constant with everyone who was fortunate to come to know him was his sense of humor and strong appreciation for sarcasm and quick wit. If you struck him with a great joke or quick retort to a sly-witted comment, you were in his good graces. Doug was a man of integrity and honor, with an incredible ethic for work and how to treat everyone, and was drawn to people with the same qualities. He was a committed family man and provider, and a loving father who set an outstanding example for his children. He was also one of the kindest, friendliest, and lovingly generous souls for anyone who was blessed to know him and call him friend, and was always available to provide some advice and comforting words… just because that was the type of person he was.
Doug’s wishes were to forego a formal ceremony, but his life will be celebrated by each and every one of us as we knew him and carried in our hearts for our remaining days.
