Joey,  Chris, and families.  I just learned of your mom's passing last night (5/30/22).  My heart hurts for all of you.  Your mom and dad were so good to me when I worked with your dad (circa ’89-’90).  But you know your dad was not just a boss to me.  He was like my second dad and your mom was right there with him.  You all treated me like one of you - complete with all the practical jokes, making fun of, and hysterical laughter.  I'll never forget the ski trips to Snowbowl and Sunrise, the launching of boats on Saguaro before the sun came up, and all the pool parties with game after game of pool volleyball.  So much fun!  Later, I and my new family moved to the area in the early 2000's.  Seeing your mom and dad so happy at the new homestead made us happy.  To ski on flat water on a Sunday afternoon - not behind “Big Red”, but behind the buttery smooth wake of the new Nautique – nothing better!

Your mother and I had several one-on-one talks back in the early days.  She always kept me on my toes and forced me to think about things from another angle.  I loved that about her.  She “mothered me”, without mothering me.  I hope (and think) you know what I mean by that.  The last time I saw your mom was at your dad’s service.  Knowing how much your mom and dad meant to each other, I knew I was walking into a very tough situation for her.  I could see the pain in her face from a distance as I approached.  But, when she saw me, she bolted toward me with a huge smile, gave me a great-big hug, and exclaimed – “you came!”  You will never know how much that meant to me.  In, surely, what was the most painful situation of her life up to that time, her naturally big and loving heart shed its burden, if only for a moment, to selflessly, and most sincerely, greet me in the most uplifting way.  I have so many fond memories of your mom, but that moment is etched in me forever and so, forever, that is how I will remember her.

So many wonderful memories shared with Joan. Of course one also thinks of Bill when talking about Joan.  Can't have one without the other. Joan shared our love of cactus and the beautiful desert around us.  Joan truly loved living in the SanTan foothills and we have so many good times and memories volunteering at the park.  Joan you will always have a special place
 in our hearts and memories.  Live on in cactus heaven. Love the Slegels
