

Lucy grew up in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; her parents were Dan and Lorena Hammel, one sister
Florence, and two brothers John and Gordon. She worked for the Carnation Company before
enlisting in the Navy in 1942. Lucy was stationed in Long Beach Military Hospital nursing soldiers
wounded in the Pacific. After the war she attended South Chicago Nursing School. In 1948 she
married William M. Wood, and moved to Crivits, Wisconsin to be farmers. They later moved back
to Chicago where Lucy was employed by South Shore Hospital from 1956-1978. In 1978 they moved
to Phoenix, Arizona, owned the “B & L Apartments,” and later moved to central Mesa, and East Mesa.
Survived by brother John Hammel of Hartford, Wisconsin, sons William G. Wood (Nancy) of Florence,
Daniel Wood (Sheila) of Phoenix, Mary Morgan (Don) of Mesa, and grandchildren Charles, Adrienne,
and Derek. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, September 13th at 1:00pm at Valley of the Sun
Mortuary, 10940 E. Chandler Heights Rd. Chandler, Arizona. Memorial donations may be made to the
American Cancer Society, and the Humane Society. Molded by the toughness of the depression, Lucy
was a tenacious hard worker, generous in spirit and giving, she loved her family, pets and strays in need,
her neighbors, and is fondly remembered by classmate Clara Daniels. She will be missed by all who knew her.
