Elbert Guy Slice, Jr. passed away in the early morning hours of October 3, 2023, at the age of 65. A memorial service will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Chapin Chapel at 123 Columbia Avenue on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11:00am. A celebration of life will follow at the Slice residence in Chapin.
Known to everyone as “Bert”, he spent his childhood exploring the woods, riding bikes to visit cousins nearby, and getting into mostly harmless mischief. Before graduating from Chapin High School in 1976, he received varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball, and track. After earning an Associate’s Degree in Business from the University of South Carolina, he began his professional career with Southern Bell (which later became BellSouth before merging with AT&T), where he worked for 44 years alongside colleagues who became his family-away-from-home.
Bert’s parents, Ann and Guy, doted on him throughout his childhood (and, to be honest, well into his adulthood). At 8 years old, he began to share the spotlight when his baby brother, D.P., was born. The boys grew up on the same dirt road their mother still lives on in Chapin.
Bert lived a life of great content. He valued his relationships with people far more than anything else. Never was that more apparent than when he became the father of two girls. He never batted those long, beautiful eyelashes at the inconvenience of learning how to construct the perfect bun for ballet class or the fact that his offspring lacked the same interest in athletics - as long as he was spending time with his girls, he cared not a lick!
He was lucky enough to spend the last 24 years of his life attached at the hip to his wife and soulmate, K.P. Together they blended their families and called their 4-kid-gang “Camp Slice.” Growing up, Camp Slice spent most warm weekends roaming Lake Murray with Bert at the wheel of his pontoon trying to sling the kids off the ski-bob float trailing behind the boat. Over the years, they hosted countless friends and neighbors for driveway bonfires, which often included Bert lighting up the grill to feed everyone followed by ice cream offered by K.P.
As the four children grew into adults, Bert supported every endeavor they undertook. Following in his father’s footsteps, Bert took the time to teach each of the kids how to work on cars, fix a leak under the sink, and generally manage the curveballs encountered in life. However, the greatest lesson Bert ever taught his kids came not from instruction but the love, patience, and understanding he gave them in all circumstances.
While he loved his children beyond measure, becoming a grandfather proved he had even more love to give. His 6 grandkids may be young, but feeling love as deep as what their Papa poured into them will not be forgotten.
In addition to his wife, Kathleen Parker “K.P.” Slice, Bert is survived by his daughters: Katie Slice Roush (Kyle) of Little Mountain and Jordan Slice-Metcalfe (Jeremy) of Chapin; his stepchildren he considered his own: John David “J.D.” Koesters (Jessica) of Cary, NC and Kristine Culver (Chris) of Apex, NC; his mother, Ann Slice, of Chapin; and his brother, David Slice (Pam) of Chapin. Bert was predeceased by his father, Elbert Guy Slice, Sr.
