

JoAnn Rumph Sanford, 90, passed away peacefully at home on January 1, 2026. JoAnn was born May 2, 1935, in Givhans, South Carolina, to the late Macon and Ollie Rumph. The youngest of three, JoAnn adored her older siblings, Herbert and Catherine, who were 11 and 9 years old when she was born. JoAnn was raised in Givhans and graduated from Ridgeville High School, where she was involved in many school activities. After high school, she attended business school and worked as a bank teller for many years before joining BellSouth, from which she retired. She had an innate ability to make and keep lifelong friends. She was an active member of Lexington Baptist Church before moving to Chapin in 2021. At the time of her death, she was a member of Chapin Baptist Church.
JoAnn will be remembered for her love of family, bluegrass music, travel, and constant support of her grandchildren. She attended many piano and dance recitals, high school musicals, football and baseball games, and graduations. She will also be remembered for her excellent cooking. None of her family has quite been able to replicate the amazing dishes she lovingly prepared.
JoAnn is survived by her two daughters, Suzanne Herndon Carroll (Les) and Olivia Hall Arnoult (Chris), eight grandchildren–Lauren Carroll, Devin Carroll (Hillary), Caitlin Carroll, Allison Carroll Hines (Eric), Ethan Carroll (Seoyeon), Kirsten Arnoult (James Howell), Blake Arnoult (Ashlyn), and Macon Arnoult. She also remained close to her two stepsons, Jim Bouye (Ellen) and Steve Bouye (Robin) and their four children–Joshua Bouye, Maegan Bouye Lambert (Tyler), Laurel Grace Bouye, and Collin Bouye. JoAnn had 18 great-grandchildren: Charlie, Gavin, Ben, Atticus, Logan, Tallulah, Emma, Owen, Ryan, Eliza, Clementine, Ruthie, Liam, Sophie, Susanna, Caroline, Eleanor, and Theo. JoAnn is also survived by nephews Scott Rumph (Kaydee) and Mark Rumph (Sharon) and nieces Carole Nungezer and Diana Nagoda. She is preceded in death by her brother, Herbert Rumph, her sister, Catherine Rumph Gaulin, and her grandson, Ryan Carroll.
A graveside service will be held on January 4, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Rumph Family Cemetery in Dorchester, South Carolina.
