CHAPIN - Michael “Crick” Barnwell Davenport, DMD, who was born in Lake City, SC, on June 26, 1954, passed away on June 8, 2018. Mike graduated from Clemson University (Kappa Sigma), then completed his dental degree and residency at MUSC College of Dental Medicine. He had three successful careers; helping to build the general practice residency at Richland Memorial Hospital (Columbia), founding the private practice of Palmetto Dental Associates (Lexington), and serving on the clinical faculty of The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University, until retiring in April 2018. He never stopped learning, teaching, mentoring, and giving generously of his time. Mike was a role model for integrity and high standards who epitomized the merger of art and science in dentistry. Along with the beautiful smiles he gave his patients, Mike’s greatest legacy is the passion for dentistry he passed on to hundreds of students, residents, and colleagues.
Mike was married to his heart and soul, Valerie, for 26 fantastic years. He was happiest on or near the water; he loved boating, skiing, and rocking on the porch. Other interests included snow skiing, golf, entertaining, travel, music, painting, cheering the Tigers, and celebrating Christmas. He was the drummer in several bands, including The Ninth Row. Mike was a multitalented go-to guy who would do anything for his friends. He actively participated in continuing education and dental organizations (especially SCADPA), and served as lay reader at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church.
Mike is survived by his wife Valerie Coté and his brother,James Claude Davenport, Jr., as well as the Coté family, Whitlock cousins, and devoted companion, Moultrie. He was predeceased by his parents, James Claude and Barbara King Davenport. (Also beloved dogs Skippy, Klaus and Dixie.)
