CHAPIN - Walter Thomas “Tom” Downing, III, 72, of Chapin, passed away Monday, December 24, 2018. He was born in Newport News, VA, to Walter Thomas Downing, Jr. and Virginia Post Downing on December 6, 1946.
Tom worked as a Safety Engineer for 20 years, and was currently working with Georgia Pacific before his passing. Tom was a member of the Acacia Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Cindy Downing; daughters, Leslie Pollock (Brett) and Kristen Downing-Hunt (Bradley); and the light of his life, grandson, Zack Pollock; cousin, Gary Ewell; mother-in-law, Fae Swittenberg; sister-in-law, Sharron Ostrander (Keith) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, father-in-law, William D. Swittenberg, Jr; brother-in-law, David Swittenberg and aunt, Katherine Hastings.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Simon St. Jude Episcopal Church, 1110 Kinley Rd., Irmo, SC. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 28, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to St. Simon St. Jude Episcopal Church.
