William “Bill” Reid Henderson, 87, of Prosperity, died Monday, December 21, 2020 at Prisma Health in Laurens, SC. He was the son of the late William and Lila Henderson. He was born in Clay County, Mississippi on July 25, 1933. Bill loved anything outdoors, which included gardening his prized knock out roses, running his tractor, resurrecting old cars. He also enjoyed woodworking and has built several cedar chests and swings for his family.
Following graduation from high school, he was awarded a football scholarship to Mississippi Junior College, which he turned down to get married. He married the love of his life, Ruth, on April 3, 1953.
He was retired from the U.S. Army in October 1979 as Chief Warrant Officer and was highly decorated with various awards and commendations after serving 23 years. During his time serving his country they lived in many places, including Germany.
He started his next career with the SC Department of Corrections in December of 1979 and worked there until his retirement in June of 1995.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his three sons, William (Vicki) Henderson, Joseph (Carole) Henderson and Rusty (Dorothy) Henderson, all of Prosperity. Also survived by his grandson, Michael Henderson of Prosperity and a special friend, Joan Smith of Newberry. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, and sisters, Mary Frances Henderson and Marie Lowther.
A private graveside service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on January 5, 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude or to Boys Town of Nebraska.
