Ted was born in Chester, PA on August 3,1932 to the late Alice Yearsley Lenderman and Allen Leslie Cullis, Sr. After graduating from Chester High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Corporal.
Following the Army, he attended Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia where he graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. While at Bethany, he made many life-long friends and met the love of his life, Carol Louise Kimball whom he married on September 6, 1958.
After graduation, Ted started his career at U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, PA working with computer mainframes. While in Pittsburgh, Ted and Carol welcomed their three children, Beth, Jan, and John. The family moved to Paoli, PA where Ted worked for Burroughs Corporation. The family moved to Matthews NC when Ted was transferred to develop and install the computer system for Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Ted finished his career with his own business, Cullis and Associates, customizing software for small businesses.
Ted was a long-time member of the Optimist Club in Matthews. He had many friends, and everyone was always welcome in the Cullis house whether it be for a meal, a celebration, or good conversation. He loved learning and had a zest for life. Whether he was riding horses, sailing, hiking Mt. Washington, or taking one of his countless (and many times eventful) road trips to visit friends and family or to see a new sight, he was all about the journey as well as the destination. He was a man of backroads and scenic routes; his children were not aware that highways existed for the longest time.
One of Ted’s biggest pleasures was spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. He loved big family gatherings on holidays and birthdays, July 4th being one of his favorites. The meaning of the holiday was true to his heart, and he relished watching his grandchildren craft his truck into creative floats for the annual neighborhood parade.
Ted is survived by his wife, Carol Kimball Cullis; sister, Audrey Lammers; and children, Beth (Steve) Leonard, Jan (Brad) Barley, and John (Leslie) Cullis; along with his six grandchildren, Christopher Leonard, Cameron Leonard, Caroline Leonard, Erica Barley (Christopher) Riesenberg, Ethan Cullis, and Evan Cullis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Cullis Easter.
