

At age17, he served in the Army, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He began his insurance career at Life of Virginia and later worked for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. He was an avid golfer; past president of West Meck Optimist Club and Thomasboro Teamsters Football Program; Director of Golden Gloves for 25 years and inducted in in Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003. He was a member of American Legion Post 262 and US National Commander of RVA and Master Mason at Westgate Lodge #738 and 32nd degree Scottish Rite Metrolina Shrine Club and Oasis Temple; he was also a Ragtop.
He was preceded in death by his wife Edna Smiley Hargett; sisters, Louise Shuffler, Dorothy Inks and brother, Gerald R. Hargett, Sr.
He is survived by his children, Michael Hargett (Judith), Bonita Allison (Jack), Lynn Hargett, Timothy Hargett, (Jill) and Tammy R. Hargett; brother, Harvey J. Hargett; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He will fondly be remembered by his five chihuahuas, Lady Bug, Lulu, Buddy, Big Boy and Buzz.
Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Mulberry Baptist Church with Reverend Larry Burns officiating. Interment will follow the service in Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 23rd from 6:00 until 8:00pm at the church.
