Barbara Ann Camp went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 30th, 2024, at Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina following a cerebrovascular accident that occurred on Monday evening, August 26th, 2024. She was 77 years old.
Barbara was the first-born child of Paul W. Huffman and his wife, Jean (Griffith) Huffman, arriving January 17th, 1947, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Her parents then welcomed her siblings, Jeffrey Huffman (1950) and Gregory Huffman (1955).
After graduating from Parkersburg High School in 1964, Barbara attended a two-year program at Potomac State College after which she went on to West Virgina University at Morgantown. She graduated with her pharmacy degree in 1969. Barbara continued to practice pharmacy for 44 years, retiring in 2013.
Barbara met the love of her life, Axel Otto Camp, in the fall of 1972. After his proposal and her acceptance on their first date, they were married on March 31st, 1973. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past March.
In July of 1976, they welcomed their only daughter together, Heidi Liane (Camp) Zabel. Barbara’s devotion to Heidi was unconditional and unwavering. While she only gave birth to one child, Barbara was a mother to many. Known as “Mama Barb” to countless numbers of Heidi’s friends, she was most affectionately called that by her other daughter from Axel’s first marriage, Charlotte Lenore (Camp) Rooks.
Barbara was a devoted wife and mother. She followed her husband as his management career with ServiceMaster led their family through many moves across the Midwest. In their 51 years of marriage, Axel and Barbara have lived in West Virginia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, South Carolina, and North Carolina. In each of these places, Barbara left a lasting impression of love and service to all those with whom she interacted.
Barbara was a devoted woman of faith who loved to share with people about the love she had found in Jesus. As her family moved throughout the country, she served in many church communities in the children’s ministry and music ministry. An accomplished alto who loved to sing, you could hear her singing praises to her Savior on any given Sunday. As she grew older, her body prevented her from attending church as she would have wanted. Regardless of any pain she was in, she was always ready to sing praise and worship, even if from her chair at home.
Apart from her work with her career and family and volunteering within the church, Barbara volunteered with and helped lead Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI) for many years. Barbara loved to craft and read. Books were another great love of her life.
Barbara was excited to become a grandmother, or “Grandmama,” as her grandson, Ian Alexander Griffin Zabel, calls her. Where once there were pictures of Heidi throughout the house, they were quickly replaced with pictures of her only grandchild. They loved to cuddle on the couch, play games and color together.
Barbara is preceded in death by her mother, Jean (1986); father, Paul (2011); brother, Jeff (2001); nephew, Tony Cruz (1988); and sister-in-law, Anna Furr (2024).
She leaves behind her husband, Axel; their daughters, Heidi and her family (Russell and Ian) and Charlotte and her family (Scott and Kevin); her brother, Greg, and his daughter, Stephanie (Ellis) Mingin; her sister-in-law, Trish Huffman; her cousin, Susan Geiger; as well as countless other friends and adopted family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to your local community food bank or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Barbara’s memory.
