Born April 4, 1940, in Salisbury NC to the late William Martin “Bill” and Elizabeth Wilson Almon, Betty was raised in Charlotte where she graduated from Central High School. She went on to earn her Associate’s degree in business studies from Kings College and continued her education at Central Piedmont Community College. She worked in both the retail and clerical fields early in her career but truly found her calling when she began working as a teacher’s assistant and substitute teacher for the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system.
She was a natural caregiver, especially to children and the elderly. She was completely devoted to her parents, her husband, and her children, and was an incredibly doting grandmother. She loved the game of baseball and was often found on the sidelines cheering on her sons and grandchildren in their respective sporting events.
Betty was considered a second mother to many young men and women over the years. Her home was always open to anyone in need. She was often busy visiting the sick and shut-in, preparing baskets full of homemade goodies and handwriting notes of encouragement.
She was a current member of Wilson Grove Baptist Church and was a previous member of McLean Road Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her parents William and Elizabeth Almon; her sister, Joyce A. Williams; and her loving husband of 62 years, Eugene Norfleet “Bucky” Buchanan.
She is survived by her sons and grandchildren David (Erin) of Yucaipa, CA, and their children Emily and Rebekah, of Charlotte and Abigail of Yucaipa; Brian (Gina) and their children Ashlyn, Ian, and Blakeney all of Charlotte; her brother, Jerry Almon (Cathy); as well as very dear loved ones Jarrod and Kim Turner of Bethel Park, PA and their children Janna and Jack; her nephews and niece, and many others who saw her as a mother figure.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 19th beginning at 11 am followed by a Celebration of Life service at 12 pm at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212. Burial will immediately follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
