Betty Alexander Cardo

Betty, born in Charlotte in 1923, was the daughter of Henry and Bess Alexander. She graduated from Central High School and remained a proud member of the Green Gables Gang. She earned a degree in Business from Duke University, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. During WWII Betty was employed by National Carbon as head of laboratory testing for batteries used by in the military. After the war she was hired as one of the first female tellers for Union National Bank, which later became First Union. Betty enjoyed playing bridge and tennis at Carmel Country Club, where she was a member. She was also a member of the Mecklenburg Chapter of the DAR.

Surviving are her four children: James J. Cardo, Jr. and his wife, Lynda, of Charleston, Thomas A. Cardo and his wife, Dottie, Beth Cardo Harris, and Nancy Cardo, all of Charlotte.

Betty was grandmother to James J. Cardo, III and his wife, Jennifer; Rebecca Cardo Eddins and her husband, Greg; Thomas A. Cardo, Jr. and his fiancée, Erin Morrow; James E. Cardo; Meg Harris Franklin and her husband, Ben; Bess Harris; Jeffrey Stanford Cardo; Robert E. Huffman, III; and Nancy Elizabeth LaFlair and her husband, Joe.

Betty delighted in her two great-grandsons, Sebastian James Eddins and Benjamin Cliff Franklin.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Betty Cardo will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 17th in the Chapel of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road. The Reverend Paul Gary will preside at the service. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be private.

The family wishes to thank Doctors Kevin Sharkey, James Boyd, Joseph Mueller, and Kimberly Case, along with the nurses and staff of Harris Hospice and the Heart Clinic at Presbyterian Hospital for their compassionate care of Mrs. Cardo.
