Carol passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 19, 2025 at the age of 82, in the company of her loving family. Born in Brooklyn, New York on Christmas Day to Charles and Marjorie (Edinburg) Perkin, her father would forever say “she was the best gift he ever received”.
Growing up in Lefferts Manor, with ancestry tracing from the American revolution, Germany, and more recently a Grandfather from Australia, she formed a unique and worldly perspective. Raised in the Dutch Reformed Church, she maintained a lifelong faith in her religion and a vibrant curiosity of other faiths and beliefs.
Her love of poetry and literature was developed at the Berkeley High School, and then in greater depth, when she earned a degree in English from Hunter College. Following graduation, Carol started her career at McGraw Hill, to further her passion in literature and publishing.
Carol wed her long-time sweetheart, Joseph Barsin Jr., on October 9th, 1965 at the Carlisle Hotel in NYC, and would embark on a 60-year marriage and global adventure. Carol and Joe would spend their first decade living in Spain, India, Thailand, and then the USA, where their first son, Joe III would be born. Finally, settling in Italy with cat Hurley, and where Scott, their second son was born.
Moving back to Ohio in 1975, Carol set to work raising the family, and new kitties Peppe, Snooky and Poochie, teaching part-time and participating in multiple club and cultural organizations. Later, when the boys got older, she was recruited to become Technical Editor at a large Engineering Firm and enjoyed planning and serving as the family tour guide on adventures throughout the USA and Europe.
Carol and Joe moved to Charlotte to begin anew, the boys were grown, but cats Bert and Squirt helped fill the nest. Carol’s New York sense of humor, combined with her strong, sympathetic character, and deep loyalty to friends blended well with her new Southern community. She joined and chaired several clubs, organizations, and continued her work in education. She formed many deep and lasting friendships over the next 30 years and grew to love the people and her new hometown.
Carol is survived by her loving husband Joe, her sons Joe and Scott, daughter-in-law Eva, son-in-Law John Foss, grandsons Robert and James Barsin, and her sister Barbara Perkin Ritz. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and their extended families whom she cherished.
On June 7th, 2025 at 11:00 there will be a memorial celebration for Jay and Carol at the Chapel in Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, with a reception afterward.
