

Christine Hayes Beam, age 90, of Charlotte passed away May 14, 2013. A service to celebrate her life will be at 4:00PM on Thursday, May 16th at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Reverends Billy Towery and Phil Turner will be officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00PM Wednesday, May 15th at the church: 1915 Oakdale Road. Mrs. Beam was born February 10, 1923 in Cherryville, N. C. She was a member of Pleasant Grove UMC, Charles Rhinehart Sunday School Class and taught the five-year-old Sunday School Class for over 10 years. Mrs. Beam graduated in 1940 from Clayton High School in Clayton, N. C., attended Geyer’s Business College and worked as chief clerk of Local Draft Board #3 in Cherryville, NC. She transferred at the close of WWII working as a ward stenographer at Oliver General Hospital, and then joined Dr. Harold McDowell Orthopedic Surgeon in Winston Salem, N. C. where she worked for three years as a secretary. Mrs. Beam began a career with the U. S. Armed Forces and retired from the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station in 1979.
Surviving are her children, Susan Beam-Gilleland of Charlotte, Danny Beam, and wife, Pam, of Belmont, NC. Mrs. Beam had two surviving grandchildren, Jason and Meredith Beam. She was preceded in death by her husband, Miller Beam, parents, Edward Julian and Ida Lassiter Hayes, sister, Mildred Hayes Wease, brothers Ned, Hal, Clyde, Edward, Jr., William “Bill”, and Colon “Toad” Hayes, and a son-in-law, Mike Gilleland.
