Born June 22, 1964, at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC, he was a son of David and Patricia Spencer. After receiving an education at Ocean Springs High School, Derek signed up to serve in the United States Navy, where he had an opportunity to see the world. He received an honorable discharge and then went to work at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula as an electrician. Derek went on to the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, to further his education. After moving to North Carolina in the late nineties, Derek entered facilities maintenance, working for apartment complexes and hotel chains in Charlotte and South Carolina. Derek was naturally gifted in maintenance and repair.
Derek was actively involved in U-Turn for Christ at Calvary Chapel in Lexington, SC, where he gave his time to the various charities they sponsored in the community. Derek was also involved with the Veteran’s Administration, where he spent time helping Veterans at the Central Midlands Transitional Retreat, in Lexington, SC.
Derek was blessed to have family and lifelong friends that cared deeply for him. Rick, Steve, Barney, Rob, Harry, and Ed were friends that stood by Derek since elementary school and junior high in Ocean Springs. He was a diehard New England Patriot’s fan since being stationed at Boston in the Navy. His sign-off was often, “Go Patriots!”.
He is survived by his father, David Oliver Spencer; brother, Joe; sister, Anne; nephews, Nate and Hayden; and niece, Grace; as well as many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia, in 2007.
Derek was cremated at Harry & Bryant’s Funeral Home in Charlotte, NC.
