Born September 26th, 1952, in San Jose, California, Diane was the daughter of Phyllis Evelyn Hubel Leonard and the late William Guisse Leonard.
Diane will be remembered for her fun-loving spirit and creativity. Auntie Dee was the “crazy” aunt that every child needs – an adult in their lives who was there solely to have fun and give them her undivided attention. She was not just the life-of-the-party, she brought the party with her!
Diane’s family moved quite a bit, including across the country three times. By the time she was in the 7th grade she had attended seven different schools. At that point the Leonard family made Charlotte their permanent home. She graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and received a bachelor’s degree in art from UNC Charlotte with an emphasis in art nouveau jewelry. She continued to enjoy creating art her entire life, although she was an accountant during her working career. Diane loved anything that shimmered, sparkled, or glittered.
In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Richard “Rick” Sullivan; stepdaughter, Janie Stallard (Josh); brother, David Brian Leonard (Earlene); sister, Susan Lynette Leonard Swepston (Van); and 5 nieces and nephews, Matthew Leonard, Ian Swepston (Jenn), Elise Swepston, Eric Swepston (Hannah), and Juliana Swepston.
In addition to her father, Diane was preceded in death by a brother, Gregory Alan Leonard.
A memorial service with Diane’s niece, Elise Swepston, officiating is planned for 7pm Thursday, April 28th at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the charity of your choice.
