After a period of declining health, Dorothy E. Schulz, “Dottie”, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 5, 2013. Born December 1, 1921, in Hagerstown, Maryland, Dottie graduated from Hagerstown High School and attended the University of Maryland. She then worked for Bell Telephone and studied dance under Catherine Littlefield, before meeting and marrying her husband of 41 years, Brig. General Robert L. Schulz. Dottie shared in Bob’s most unusual Army career of Aide to General Dwight D. Eisenhower when he served at Columbia University and SHAPE; Military Aide to President Eisenhower; Executive Assistant to former President Eisenhower; and finally, Special Assistant as Liaison to Former Presidents under President Richard Nixon. She was privileged to travel, meet world figures and make many lifelong friends
Prior to moving to Charlotte, Dottie lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was an inveterate Redskins fan, loved to travel, adored her home overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and was active in volunteer work through the Princess Anne Women’s club and Virginia Beach General Hospital. Volunteering brought her much joy and she had a particular fondness for helping young children improve their reading skills. Dottie often said that through volunteering, she gained much more than she gave. She also enjoyed attending the theatre and the symphony, supporting both the Virginia Beach and Charlotte orchestras.
Family was very important to Dottie, and she took great pleasure in the times spent with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her three children: Karen Weber (Rick) of Charlotte; Carl Schulz (Margie) of East Brunswick, New Jersey; and Carol Henning (Gary) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; as well as five grandchildren: Kendra Johnson (Luke), Andrew Schulz (Tina), James Schulz, Bryon Weber and Allison Henning.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at Southminster for their many kindnesses. The healthcare team provided love and support to Dottie and her family; and the dedicated caregivers of Magnolia Place, Holly House and Ivy Lane are without equal.
Dottie will be laid to rest alongside Bob in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church (8801 Park Rd. Charlotte, NC 28210) or the Southminster Foundation (8919 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210).
