Earl Donald Talbert was a husband, father, teacher, and woodworker who spent his life in service to his family, his country, and his God. He lived his 96 years in gratitude, generosity, and love. His family and friends remember him as a talented, innovative man who always had time for others.
He was born in Norwood, NC in 1927 to James Dewey Talbert and Beulah Mae Ross Talbert and later had a stepfather, Travis Craig Dry. He attended Norwood High School, Pfeiffer Jr. College, and Catawba College. He held a master’s degree in education.
He was raised as a small-town boy in Norwood but yearned to serve. In 1945, he left high school early to join the US Navy and served in World War II. He saw active duty in Okinawa on the USS Boxer.
In 1952, he married the love of his life, Dolores Jeraline “Jerry” Polk Talbert. They were married for 71 wonderful years. He is also survived by his children, Michael Wayne Talbert (Debbie), Grace Elaine Talbert Hasty (Lanny), Leslie Anne Talbert Pollard and his beloved dog, Lady. Earl and Jerry are loved by 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Earl can be remembered for so many things. Like his teaching career at Central Piedmont Community College, where he taught the first generation of computer programmers using an IBM mainframe and punch cards. Or his great joy of woodworking, making everything from furniture to flamingo guitars. He would spend hours in his woodworking shop, both alone and with family, to create the most beautiful pieces. He was also a music connoisseur and enjoyed everything from gospel to Andres Segovia to Willie Nelson.
He loved learning new things and sharing his insights with others. And if a friend or neighbor needed his help, he was always right there. But he was most devoted to his family, as they were to him. His memory will be cherished for generations and that is the best testament for a life well lived.
Services will be held in the chapel at McEwen Funeral Services, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212 on Thursday, January 18, 2024. The family will greet friends at Noon and the funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM. A reception will be held following the funeral at the same location.
