Edward Inglis Smith III

Edward I. Smith, 82, of Charlotte died at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville, NC on Wednesday, January, 19, 2010. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him.

Edward was born in Athens, Georgia on July 6, 1928 to the late Edward I. Smith and Hart Wylie Smith. He was a graduate of Athens High School and attended the University of Georgia. He served in the US Air Force for four years. He was employed by Control Data Corporation and retired in 1989. Mr. Smith was an active member of Sharon Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his loving wife Louise Smith of Charlotte, NC; two daughters, Patricia Walsh and her husband Ed of Walpole, MA; Sandra Smallwood and her husband Keith of Concord, NC; one son Jeffrey Smith and his wife Katherine of Charlotte, NC; Three grandsons Andrew and Brian Walsh and Ian Smith. Other survivors include sister Susan S. Cavanagh of Athens, GA. Edward was preceded in death by two sisters Laura Smith and Hart Wylie Shiver.

A Memorial Service will be 3:00 p.m. at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210 on Sunday, January 23, 2010 with Rev. Ron Nelson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church reception hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sharon Presbyterian Church or to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Rd. # 200, Charlotte, NC 28210.
