

Elizabeth (Betsy) Long Clark of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, following a period of declining health. She was born on September 5th, 1931 in Roxboro, North Carolina to Oscar Wayne Long and Iris O’Briant Long. After graduating from Mars Hill University and Meredith College, she dedicated nearly thirty years of her life to teaching in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Betsy taught English and Social Studies at McClintock and Randolph middle schools. She found joy in teaching and instilling the same thirst for knowledge in her students. Betsy loved to play bridge and had an incredible bridge club where they shared many years of laughter, teasing and a good hand of cards. She loved and valued their friendship and support for over 50 years. She will be remembered for her quick wit and love of life.
Betsy was a former member of the Charlotte Women’s Club, the American Association of University Women, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and the Epilepsy Foundation of North Carolina. Her loving husband, Kenneth William Clark, precedes her in death. She is survived by her three daughters, Beverly McCutcheon (Jimmy Glenn) of Charlotte, N.C., Leigh Woods (John L.) of Virginia Beach, VA and Karen Charles (Joe) of Charlotte, N.C., and Mary Carol Whitney, who was like a daughter to her. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Ben Buchanan (Jackie Alvarado) of Charlotte, N.C., Cam Buchanan (Spencer) of Charlotte, N.C., Clarkie Woods of Denver, CO, Katy Woods of Charlotte, N.C., Ryan Binns of Virginia Beach, Ken, Maribeth and Jay Charles of Charlotte, N.C. She is survived by her brother, Bill Long (Hope) and sister, Becky Oakley of Roxboro, N.C. Betsy is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening, December 18, 2015 at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte, N.C. The memorial service to honor her life will be held in the Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Rd., Charlotte, at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 19th. Burial at Sharon Memorial Park will be private.
