Can you believe it! You crossed a milestone birthday yesterday. I saw that on my phone and remembered you yesterday as I do today. I sure hope you had a big bash of a party with your new friends up there yesterday. I bet you've become an AMAZING artist and a FANTABULOUS singer up there in heaven. I bet you have your own room for your artwork in the art gallery of heaven and have a prime roll in the worship and praise team of heaven's choir.

No words I choose could possibly capture the unimaginable loss that I feel every day, but especially today. The years, days, months go by - songs drift in and out, memories ebb and flow back into consciousness. So many touchstones to remind me of you. You were only 14, when you left us; and now it's been 9 years, since I last hugged you good-bye in a parking lot. This was the last time I saw you alive. The next night we shared our last texts about Christmas presents, which you knew you would never receive as you were checking out of this life. 

I heard Home from Phillip Phillips and John Mayer's Daughters recently. Sometimes I wonder if you're just on the other side of this thin veil watching me and sending me these little messages. I miss you with every fibre of my being.



You left us eight years ago today. I still remember you running around in the backyard here, falling asleep on my lap while I stroked your hair. So many memories and little things will trigger a fleeting memory that seems like a lifetime ago. And it was. Forever 14, Forever Loved, Never Forgotten.

Missing you on your 22nd birthday Erica. Lauren and I ate sushi and went to 2nd and Charles. You would have liked this store. We wondered what you would have liked at this stage of your life. If you and Lauren would have ever had an apartment together. If you would have been a civil rights protestor. We saw Pocky Sticks at the store and thought about you too.  Love you always! Love, Mom

I thought of you yesterday. Seems like it was just yesterday when we sat in that parking lot watching the fireworks at Carowinds. You, Lauren, your mom,  Perleen and my mom. Time sure flies, but memories don't. They live in the heart. Never forgotten - Never!

I haven't been able to think of the words I wanted to say for the past week. There are no words that honor you enough. You're still missed by so many. And although sometimes it may seem like it, you are not just an obligatory post a few times a year. You are truly and deeply missed. People still love you and always will. Rest easy my beautiful Firefly.

My Sweet Girl, I find it hard to believe that you've been gone for five years now.  It seems like every fall I go into this state of depression and it doesn't really lift until spring.  The heaviness in my soul doesn't ever really lift.  Sounds of sirens and flashing lights of emergency vehicles always bring me back.  Songs bring to you.  I hear A Team and always have to sing it.  So many other songs that come across at just the right time bring me back to you too.  Seems that it's just part of the landscape now.  I see butterflies, lightning bugs, dragonflies and I'm always reminded of you.  There hasn't been a day yet that I haven't thought about you.  

I went to St. Matthew's for a Women's Retreat and absolutely lost it sitting in the sanctuary where you took your First Communion.  I was a complete train wreck.  Remembering when you were in a play there.

So the missing you part never gets any easier.  The only solace is that you are no longer in the pain that you were in.  I hope that you are at peace now.

Happy Birthday my sweet child. Today, you would have been 19 in this world and I can only imagine what you would been like on this earth. Lauren has matured so beautifully and I am sure you would have been the compassionate person you were while you were here. I am sure I would have been excited to see your progress and your works. Maybe, you would have been returning from your dream year of travel and writing and heading into your first year in College.  I only wish I could have read your writings. You may have finished your book about your Zach charachter. I do not know. It is all just supposition now. Oh how I miss you every single day, my Erica bear. We provided another scholarship in your name this year to a wonderful boy in Indian Land High School named DeVeon. Guide him to keep up his compassionate soul. Like you, he often befriended other students whom others had disregarded. He reminded me of you and was our easy choice. We will continue to try and give back in the name of humility and compassion in this world. I love you and cannot wait to reconnect to your soul.  Every day, my heart hurts and longs for you. Oh my baby girl, this never stops being hard. I understand your pain and yet I only wish I knew how it led you so I could have found the way to make it stop. Dads are supposed to keep their babies safe and I failed. It is undoubtedly the greatest of failures and haunting pain in my life. Yet, I am grateful for the time you were in my life. I can now look at your photos and start with a smile before the tears come pouring down. You were really so beautiful, smart and talented. I know this life is hard and many of us wish to be gone. I only wish you did not go sleep deprived for two days so your better judgement could have just cried out for help instead of going down that horrible tunnel. Maybe one day I will be able to look back only with a smile and memory of your spirit and what you offered this world. I am told that is when one realizes they have mostly beaten the grief down. I am better but still have so far to go. Next week, Lauren and I will go to London in honor of you. The dream you had to travel and write your first year out of high school would have had you there this year. We will spread your ashes over the lake in London where the Royal Swans fly so that they come and dip in and carry you over England. I know it is just symbolic but I hope you can see and feel the land that you were enamored by. Like your Mom, I only hope for the afterlife and am so confused. I choose to live for Lauren and her happiness. You would be so proud of the person she has become and she continues to grow, One day....I may be able to find the happiness you wished me. I find my spots and will keep trying. I live for the day to see you again so that our spirits can embrace and I can feel this crater lift from my heart. I need you my baby girl and my life will never be whole without you. I love you so much Erica bear. I miss you to the moon and back.

Sunshiny daydreams, when you were the light of my world.  But it vanished quick as a vapor, and you were gone.  RIP Erica, you were such a beautiful child.  You had a lot going for you.  You were smart and kind and funny and talented.  You lacked one thing, belief in yourself.  And I will continue to miss you every day.  

Today I drink tea and remember that horrible day.  It still feels like yesterday the anguish and all that lead up to that day.  The why's still always come up.   But after four years I know that I won't have any more answers than I do questions.  

This year you would have possibly been backpacking across Europe.  Possibly writing, possibly have fallen in love.  So many possibilities all dashed.  I will always feel so sad, a melancholy that never can fully leave even when I'm having the most beautiful of times.  I always carry you with me.  I've tried very hard to do what you asked of us, Do something that makes you happy."  I've enjoyed spending time with Lauren, my boyfriend, my family and my friends.  I've tried to get it together, but sometimes it's a real struggle.  I miss you so much and still find the whole loss of you something that stops me in my tracks.  I go around in circles barely making it by.  Other times are better.  I sit still more.  I think more.  I can finally stay at home without feeling like I'm losing my mind.  I'm more of a recluse in a way.  Alone in my thoughts.  Because at the end of the day, this weight of losing you is still so absolutely profound.  It never subsides.  I have to keep a stiff upper lip a lot and it's left me somewhat isolated.  But I guess I put the walls up just to get through the day.  I'm not sure if I'm handling the grief the right way, but there is no clear roadmap.  Just the endless days of getting through until hopefully I can see you again.  I'd like to think there really is an afterlife.  If there's not I think we'd all just end it now.  But I hold onto hope that there is an afterlife.  That someday I will be able to hold your little hands again, give you a hug that lasts for eternity and that maybe, just maybe you're looking down on me this morning, four years after you made that horrible fateful decision and are sorry that you committed suicide.  Maybe just maybe you wished you hadn't.  Because there are so many that still miss you.  

We haven't stopped loving you.  The only thing that stopped was you.  So sad baby.

We gathered today at your dad's place out by the pool. Carly, Conner, Shannon,  Drew, Hannah, Bailey, Pam, Brie, Kim, and Lauren. We grilled out and had some desserts and just enjoyed your sweet friends. They're all graduated now and doing neat things with their lives. Thankful for their sweet support and memories of you.  A storm came up and then subsided enough to try and set off the luminaries. It was kind of a bust. But we laughed and figured you got a kick out of it. Happy 18th Birthday baby. We love you!

Happy Birthday my baby girl. Today, you would be 18 down on this earth. We just had a small picnic party in honor of you. We had some of your old close friends with us. It was pleasant to see them and I know you were with all of us. We tried very desperately to fly Chinese made luminaries in the wind and slight rain over the lake. It was quite funny as we were only able to launch two and burn a couple a long the way. We laughed and spoke of you. We had hoped to launch several. We thought it was funny to be fighting all of the craziness of the fire and wind and rain. We realized how much that you may have been laughing too and enjoyed the thought of your smile and laughter. I love you so much. We all do. You are with us my beautiful child. I do not know if there are birthdays for souls. If so, please know that I am wishing you the best birthday ever. I only wish you were her to hold and hug. I miss you so much. It is a crazy world down here and I know you truly are in a better place.  Daddy.

For Compassion and Humility

Deadline: May 12, 2016

This scholarship was founded in memory of Erica Ann Sullivan, a former Indian Land student who moved on prematurely. Erica Sullivan was creative and artistic. She thought of others first and exemplified compassion to all people and animals. She was always inclusive and always cared. Her special concern in life was the injustice that media and society put on people of different race, religion, orientation and people who do not fit social media's perfections.This $2000 scholarship is awarded in four $500 installments to a student who brings compassion and humility to all their pursuits. Special consideration will be given to a student who requires fewer than 4 years to complete their education.

Requirements:
Submit an essay on the topic below. Length is not pre-determined.
Must be planning post-secondary education in any 2-or4-year college or university or technical school. Student can pursue any course of study. 
Provide 2 short references from a non-family member or school staff person. Your reference should include an act or acts of kindness they have witnessed you doing.

Prepare a cover sheet with your name, date, and essay title on the front
Attach your essay. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE ESSAY SHEET ITSELF!
Essay question: Now is the time that you rise into the world of military, jobs, careers and colleges. It easy to focus on money and professional success. Some may even believe that personal growth is only about money and success. As you move through life you will find that doing right by others and thinking less of yourself and more of others is what brings true actualization and satisfaction in life. Please write an essay that expresses your thoughts and/or past or future experience/goals on Personal Humility and Compassion for others.

My baby girl, I love you so much and continue to miss you in a terrible way. I am beginning to look back at you with a smile and I am always so proud of who you were on this earth. This is an especially hard time as you should be graduating from High School and I am sure you would be so happy. I only wonder where your heart would have taken you....writing, art or some other direction. I know your dream was to travel and write your first year out of school and I hope that you have seen from the heavens what you wanted to explore here. I will be going to England this year to spread your ashes on the lake where the royal swans dip. They will carry you all over the England you were so interested in.  Erica, I am so proud of the legacy you have left in me and others....one of humility and compassion for others. I am attaching the scholarship in your name that we will be giving to students at Indian Land High School and the Northwest School of the Arts. I hope you are proud! My baby girl. As you know, this has been an extremely hard thing for me to deal with and this time of the year always brings back all the haunting thoughts and what if's. While I still don't understand why this happened, I do know how much you are missed. You are with me everyday and I still do not know how I get through without you. They say life is tough and we need to be tough to get through. Maybe, I am tougher than I knew. At any rate, I will continue to try and celebrate you and I will try to be happy that you are out of this miserable existence. Maybe I should congratulate you. All I really know is that my life still burns in ultimate sadness without you. It just kills me still that I can not feel your presence and I long for the day I can. My sweet, sweet baby girl. How do I go on every day without you? I do not know. Two years have gone by and my heart is as wounded as the day you moved on. I walked into a major school of arts this year and saw paintings and drawings from seniors and reveled in how much better you were as only a freshman when you left us. Had a mini meltdown at the grocery store tonight hearing Barbra Streisand singing about children around the tree Christmas morning. I was able to get white roses and some white pasta - all things my daughter wanted at her funeral. Picked up the Jammie Dodgers that she loved so much. So how weird is it to just start crying at the store? I feel like I should have a better handle on grief. But it doesn't work that way, does it? When she first died it was exactly three weeks before Christmas and four before New Years Eve. I went to bed at 9 that New Years Eve. Hosted Christmas dinner for my ex husband and his girlfriend at the request of my other daughter. Amazing how the memories take me right back to that place and yet it's still different. Two years to process the most horrific experience in my life. Nothing else could compare to this kind of pain we've all had to endure. I wish I had all the answers to all the whys and what happened for her to arrive to that point. Miss her so.

I miss you Erica. I think about every day still. I love you.

On your 16th Birthday, we are getting together with Carly's mom for brunch, Lauren and I are going to the Whitewater Center in the afternoon - remembering the times we would raft, kayak, and do the obstacle courses.  We had one really great day out there so long ago now.  I'm happy that for that day, I got it right and you were happy.  Wish we were celebrating with you today.  I celebrate that you were in my life, and mourn that you are not here any longer.  Tonight we will do a luminary release at the house.  As always, I love you, I miss you, Happy 16th Birthday to you. Everyday you are missed more than you know. Today we are reminded in a different way of your passing and the sadness in our hearts. It still seems surreal...like a really bad dream. I see pictures of you and long to see you again; to talk to you; to help you in anyway I can. You are precious, beautiful, talented, and enough!! No one had the right to tell you otherwise.  I will continue to honor your life in ways that advocate for peace and compassion toward others and tolerance and understanding toward individuality. You deserved so much more than that my love. It has been a year since you left and yet it still does not seem real. Your talents and spirit were immense and your smile so endearing leaving all to wonder what might have been if there was more time to allow them to flourish. It was so hard to believe what you did with your 14 years. The void that you left is beyond measure and the pain for those that loved you remains fresh. You will live on in memory and be forever missed. So much of what I knew of you was from the enormous pride and love that your Dad shared with me almost daily.  It's so hard for me to believe that you've been gone a year.  It seems just like yesterday that I pushed you on the swings at countless parks and got the double-stroller in and out of the van to zoos in so many different cities.  Your quick wit combined with intelligence and quirky sense of humor made you captivating.

I thank God for every moment I was able to spend with you cherishing hours of you holding my finger, while you slept, rocking you to sleep, reading to you, holding you, playing hide and seek, throwing the nerf ball with you during adult swim.  So many different thoughts all jumbled into a lifetime.  I wish you had stayed, but I still thank God for you.  I love you with all of my heart forever.

Erica... I miss you so much. Please come back... I can't stand you being gone. It still hasn't fully hit me that you won't be coming back. I still wake up everyday thinking any minute you will text me or send me a message on tumblr saying you're alright and it was some cruel joke. My mind knows it'll never happen but I can't help but hope. I love you.

10 months ago you were still within reach to be in my arms. I am so sorry that I did not see the deep pain you were in. If I only would have know your direction then I could have held on to you forever protecting you from those internal demons. Now I cry out every day for you in the pain you must have felt. I feel you very heavy right now and I miss you immensely. I love you so much and pray that God has you close and that you are in the freedom of his love.

Erica, I love you so. It seems so much has gone quiet and the pain has eased somewhat. Yet, I miss you every day and look at your pictures still with more sanguine than happiness. I can't wait to see you one day. Now, that is all I have....the hope to be with you one day in eternity. I love you so much, my bear. Miss you constantly.

Erica, my love. I miss you so. I just got done reading some of your poetry and I felt you so close. I love you every day and my tears just keep flowing. God is with you, my Erica bear, and I know I should be happy that you are free. I just miss you so much and my selfish heart still can't bear that you are gone. I love you.

Erica, I miss you. I was in Annie with you, you were so sweet and nice. i remember you would sit under a table backstage during the performances and whenever I would pass by, I would see you smile. You were so talented. I loved getting to know you. I remember getting to sit on stage with you, having a scene with you being orphans. I was excited when I found out you were Duffy, because you were always so nice to me. I miss you so much, even if I never got the opportunity to become closer to you. I wish I had been able to. You were so amazing,  you had the prettiest blue eyes I had ever seen, and one of the most genuine smiles around. You don't see that often. I admired your artistic ability and  your drawings. I always thought you would go so far. We dedicated Fame to you this year. The whole show I was thinking of you, and how the year before you were next to me on the very same stage. i miss you and You and your family are always in my prayers.

Erica - on Tuesday I was going through a bunch of old pictures Uncle Rick has and saw some old photo's of you as a little girl. What a little doll you were. You look just like your dad and have the shape of your mom's face too. Just a beautiful little girl, who grew up to be a beautiful young lady. I looked at those pictures and felt so sad and so confused and lost. Even though I know why it happened, I still ask why did it have to happen? and miss you more than you can imagine.

Erica I miss you so much, you are such an inspiration to me and to others. You are so kind, talented, thoughtful and beautiful. I always admired how you weren't afraid to be yourself and do what you love. I hope you are doing well and are full of peace and contentment now.

Oh Erica. It hurts so bad. My therapist and my friends don't understand. They say I'll get over it. But you can't just get over someone as amazing and special as you are. You were so special and so loved. I miss you so much. I only wish you could have seen how many people care about you. But I know you see it now. And I know now that at least you're happy up there. I miss you Erica. I want you to come back.
