

Forrest Reed Wingate, 96, died Thursday, June 30, 2016. He was born in Charlotte, NC, on August 24, 1919, to James Lloyd and Irene Ferrell Wingate and graduated from High School in Cortland, NY. He enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard in 1942 and served with the U. S. Navy on USS Carson City (PF-50) in the Pacific Theatre. After WWII he returned to Charlotte, NC, and retired from Foote Mineral Co., Kings Mountain, NC, in 1978 after a career in manufacturing. He enjoyed his retirement spending many hours in his workshop, inventing and building. Forrest was a founding member of Steeleberry Methodist Church, a former Boy Scout Leader and an active member of Westberry Optimist Club. He was preceded in death by Emma Hall Wingate, his beloved wife of 58 years, and his two brothers; and he was survived by three daughters, Ann Wingate (Earl Barker) of Jacksonville, Florida, Jane Wingate and Ellen Hutchins (Jim) of Charlotte; two sisters, Pauline Lane of Raleigh and Barbara Russell of Charlotte; three granddaughters, Elisabeth McGaha (Gabe), Jennifer Zagelow (Luke) and Katelyn Hutchins; two great-grandchildren, Lydia Ruth Zagelow and Liam Forrest McGaha; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 6, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The family will receive guests beginning at 11:00; services begin at 12:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials are invited for the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 1001.
