
After a short illness, Fran Ross Whisnant, surrounded by family, died on October 16, 2023. Born in Atlanta on January 8, 1943, she was the daughter of Frank Bateman Ross and Dorothy Hancock Ross and the stepdaughter of Constance M. Ericson Ross.
She grew up in Glen Burnie, MD, and graduated from Baltimore Friends School, after which she attended the University of Delaware. Upon moving to Charlotte in 1962, she began a successful career as a computer specialist working in banking and other fields. After retirement she served as a volunteer with a variety of charitable organizations in Charlotte. She was a sports fan and a dog lover and was known for her generosity and calm in the swirl of family life.
She is survived by sisters, Sharon Ericson Schramm of Carrboro, NC and Constance Ericson Duncan of Charlotte; brother, Robert Webster Ross of Fargo, ND; as well as four nephews and two nieces. She was a proud mother to six children: Luke Whisnant, Lisa Whisnant Cox (David), Liz Whisnant Schmitz (Kris), John Whisnant (Ashley Arbo), Jayne Whisnant Lanier (Dan), Peter Dawyot (Nancy Woytowich) and grandmother to nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Assistance League of Charlotte, Community Link of Charlotte, or Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
