

Charlotte - Frances Edith Gilbert, 96, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2016. She was born October 11, 1920 in Lynn, Massachusetts to the late Harry Clifford and Bertie Rhyne Christenbury Northrop.
The family moved to Charlotte in 1924. Edith attended Elizabeth Elementary and Piedmont Junior High School in Charlotte. She graduated from Central High School in 1938 and then Queens College with a BSSA Degree. Edith was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
Edith worked at the old Alexander Graham Junior High School, Dilworth School as the school secretary. She was a former member of the Charity League, where she held several chairmanships, and the Junior Women's Club. She was also a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Couples Sunday school. Edith served as secretary, and also treasurer of The Presbyterian Women, as well as a choir mother. She was past regent and secretary of Liberty Hall Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and worked with Friendship Trays. Her hobbies included knitting, reading, bridge and ceramics. She traveled through most of Europe, England, Scotland, Hawaii and the United States.
Edith married Roger Kendall Gilbert at Myers Park Methodist Church on January 25, 1946. They had three daughters, Jeanette Rhyne Gilbert Humphries (Mrs. David S.) of McDonough, GA, Frances Elaine Gilbert Martin of Charlotte and Patricia Karen Gilbert Herndon of Charlotte.
She married Carlyle T. Hall on April 23, 1992.
She was preceded in death by Roger K. Gilbert on October 31, 1977, Megan Elizabeth Herndon on September 25, 1982 and Carlyle T. Hall on January 3, 1999. Edith is survived by her grandchildren, Joshua Gilbert Martin, Alyssa Anderson Martin Horne and husband Matt; great-grandsons, Henry George Horne and Emmitt Joseph Horne; niece, Debra Lee Mitchell and husband David; nephew, Nelson Clifford Northrop and wife Debbie Jean; brother-in-law, John "Jack" K. Gilbert; and sister-in-law, Betty Gilbert Kirby.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Monday, November 7th, at Harry & Bryant's "Chapel in the Oaks", 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
