After growing up in Vandergrift, Fred moved to Lakeland, FL where he finished his schooling at Florida Southern. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Fred was an avid sailor and singer, singing in a Barber Shop Quartet and chorus.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 61 years Ilse Johnston; son, Bill Johnston; daughters, Cindy Martin and Connie Baci, as well as four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Crown Memorial Park, 9620 Rodney St, Pineville, NC 28134 at 1:00 PM on Monday, May 16, 2016.
