George Martin Byrne, age 90 , of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on March 4th, 2026. Born on February 10th, 1936 in Orange, NJ, he was the child of Frank and Helen Byrne and grew up with a deep appreciation for music, history, astronomy and books.
Throughout his life, Dad was known for his kindness, humor, resilience and generosity. He built his career in social services, where he was admired for his accomplishments and his love for humanity towards ALL people. He had a career working for the Centers for Disease Control where he specialized in Diabetes, Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention and Injury Control. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his family and his passions. Outside of work, he found joy in teaching others about subjects he already knew. George's hobbies and interests helped define who he was. He was passionate about learning new things and spent his nights staring at the stars and planets through his telescope. He cherished time spent with his daughter and her surrogate family with whom she surrounded herself.
George is survived and deeply missed by his daughter Marika and a son that he gained through marriage, Jamie Ragan and countless extended NJ family. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne Marie. His memory will be carried forward by all who loved him.
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring . In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bullies 2 The Rescue, reflecting his love of the bulldog community and all his granddogs.
Those who knew him treasured his warm smile, his generous spirit and he was a shining light that left a profound impact on the lives of those who had the pleasure of meeting him.
Dad, we will miss you immensely! You were our "go to" when life got rough, you were our sanity in this crazy world and our comfort when we needed clarity. You were always someone we could count on and although you were a straight shooter, you always got your point across without judgement and always provided sound advice. You always made sure we made our decisions after thinking things through. You always gave it 110% and never stopped fighting for what's right. Because of YOU, we have the hearts of a lion, the love of our families and an insane work ethic. We find comfort in knowing that Dad's legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared and the memories we will cherish forever.
