George was born on November 12,1946 to Latvian parents, Albert and Rasma Janson, at a Latvian displaced persons camp in Germany, while awaiting transit to America as immigrants. Both parents preceded him in death. At the age of two, George moved with his parents and younger sister Mary to the United States. Their family grew with the birth of his younger sister, Grace in Charlotte, NC.
George’s enduring love story began with his high school sweetheart, Faye Merritt Janson, whom he married and spent many cherished years with until her passing. Married 58 years, together, they raised two daughters: Erika (Janson) Holmes (David) of Waxhaw, NC, and Rebecca Janson of Alexandria, VA. George was a proud grandfather to three grandsons—David II, Christian, and Yates Holmes—whom he adored with all his heart. He is also survived by his beloved sheltie, Patrick, who already feels the emptiness of his loss.
George is survived by his two sisters, Mary Janson Ingmire (Jim) and Grace Horton, both of whom were with him in his final days. He also leaves behind nieces Jessica Cody (James), Melanie Oleachea (Tony), and Angie Morton (Clay) as well as nephew John Horton (Lindsey). Additionally, George is survived by his sister-in-law Carolyn Hankins, and his niece Linda Hankins and nephew Kelly Hankins, his wife Lizzy and their children Clayton and Erin Hankins all of whom cherished their time with him.
A proud veteran, George served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Later in life George became a member of the VFW. After his service, he worked at Continental Tire and Comer Industries, where he retired after many years of dedicated work.
Later in life, George developed a passion for golf and enjoyed the game with new friends, finding great joy in the sport. He was also an avid reader with a particular fondness for historical books, shows, and memorabilia. George’s hobbies also included restoring Volkswagens, creating beautiful landscaping, and woodworking. It was a daily ritual for George to challenge himself with difficult crossword puzzles, in pen nonetheless. He recently became a member of Matthews Presbyterian Church, where he was particularly drawn to the church’s beautiful pipe organ, which reminded him of his many years at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Matthews Presbyterian Church, 207 W. John St., Matthews, NC 28105.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society in support of pancreatic cancer research or to the Humane Society of Mecklenburg County.
