

George proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963 as an active-duty aircraft mechanic. He received an honorable discharge and remained deeply proud of his military service throughout his life.
Following his service, George continued a lifelong commitment to public service. He worked for New York City Transit Authority as a subway conductor, and later devoted 31 years to the United States Postal Service, where he served as a mail carrier and trainer. He was a proud union member and retired in 2002. George supported several veterans organizations, including Wounded Warriors, reflecting his lifelong respect for service and those who served.
George was a man of faith and a believer in God. His faith guided how he lived; quietly, consistently, and through action rather than words. Though life brought its challenges, his heart remained rooted in his spiritual beliefs and focused on wanting the best for all of his children. He did not speak loudly about his faith; instead, he lived it through thoughtfulness, humility, and love for others. George trusted in a higher purpose during difficult moments and carried himself with grace and perseverance. His legacy will continue through the values he instilled, the lessons he modeled, and the love he shared with his family.
George had a deep love for history and was an avid reader, spending countless hours immersed in books that expanded his understanding of the world and the past. He was also a photographer, appreciating moments worth preserving. George enjoyed watching movies and sporting events, most often from his favorite chair, where he found comfort, routine, and peace.
George showed love through generosity, responsibility, and sacrifice. He believed providing for his family was one of life’s greatest duties. He made sure his wife and children had everything they needed, often placing their well-being above his own. His love was steady and dependable—expressed through consistency, hard work, and unwavering commitment to family.
George was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Washington, and granddaughter Sarah Kyesi Rose Brown.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Melanie Ann Washington (Mitchell); his children, Jirard Eric Washington, Charlene Ann Jenkins, Edmund Lamont Washington, Cliffton Charles Washington, and Siobhan Monique Washington Brown; his sister, Aundrea Washington; his grandchildren, Sionnah Washington-Brown, Seth Washington, Saya Brown, Sundi Brown, Soleil Brown, Dominique Bailey, Taheem Jaaber, Tah-Asia Jaaber, Jallah Jaaber, Justice Isom, Eliza Brown, and Caleb Dorsett-Washington; Great-Grand Children: Laneasia Roland, Laniya Barringer, Mekhi Bailey, Legacy French, and Achilles Carter; his son-in-law, William Brown; and his daughter-in-law, Tracey Washington, along with many extended family members and friends.
George G. Washington passed away on January 20, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the age of 83. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, committed father, proud grandfather, dedicated veteran and provider whose life was defined by service, faith, hard work, and quiet love - providing, protecting, and showing up.
