Harold J. “Hal” Washam, 92, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026. Born on November 25, 1933, in Davidson, NC, Hal lived a life defined by integrity, humility, and a deep respect for everyone he encountered.
A proud graduate of Odell High School’s Class of 1952, Hal went on to attend Catawba College, where he excelled both academically and athletically. A standout on the baseball field, he earned All-Conference honors all four years—a testament to his talent, discipline, and love of the game.
Following graduation, Hal served in the U S Army. He was transferred to France where he served on the Army baseball and golf teams and played in tournaments across Europe and North Africa. His time in service strengthened his character and broadened his appreciation for people and places around the world.
Hal built a distinguished 26-year career with Southern Bell/BellSouth, holding several management roles and ultimately serving as Network District Manager. He then embarked on a successful second career with Mass Mutual (formerly Connecticut Mutual), helping individuals and families plan for their futures with the same trustworthiness and care that defined every part of his life.
A scratch golfer with a passion for the sport, Hal traveled the world with his beloved wife, Loretta, and their friends, playing courses near and far. His love of golf—and the way he carried himself both on and off the course—led his former club, Longview, to name an annual tournament in his honor. He was also an avid sports fan who found joy in watching nearly any competition, especially when the Atlanta Braves were on the field.
Those who knew Hal describe him as a true gentleman: humble, generous, respectful, trustworthy, and unwavering in his integrity. He had a quiet strength and a gracious spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Hal was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Loretta Helms Washam, and by his parents, Harry and Annie Washam. He is survived by his brother, Mack Washam (Sue) of Charlotte; nieces Ashley Washam Gordon (Rand) of Clover, SC, Allison Washam Porter (Cliff) of Charlotte, NC, and Kim Hicks Sizemore (Jeff) of Pawleys Island, SC; nephew Brandon Washam (Faith) of Hickory, NC; and a large extended family—some related by blood, many embraced as family by heart.
Hal cherished his family deeply and held a special gratitude for the enduring friendships he shared with the Little family, the Tighe family, and Connie Sparrow. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026 beginning at 1pm with burial to follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
Memorial gifts may be directed to The Longview Men’s Group, a component fund of the National Christian Foundation. These donations will help provide scholarships for children living in extreme poverty to attend Brookstone, a private Christian school in downtown Charlotte.
