Helen's formative years were spent in North Carolina. Later she made Detroit, Michigan her permanent residence, where she would spend the greater part of her life. This is where she met the love of her life -John J. Bell. They were married for over 50 years. Helen and John returned to Helen's home state of North Carolina in 2000. Helen became a widow when her beloved John predeceased her in 2006.
Helen was a devoted Christian who loved and lived for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She told everyone she met "God loves you and so do I".Helen would give words of encouragement to everyone she met. She believed in living the life she preached about. She was a student of the Bible and studied it daily even while battling an illness.
She played the piano and taught Sunday School for her home Church in Detroit and Charlotte before getting ill. She was a missionary to Haiti and a Co-founder of the Bowels of Compassion and Mercy Ministries/School in Haiti with her husband. She often said "I love to sew for the precious children in Haiti":
Helen also enjoyed gardening, baking cakes, and making her signature rolls.
She leaves to cherish many precious memories: her devoted and loving daughter, Carol D. Bell, her beloved sister, Bessie Calpen, both of Charlotte, NC. Preceding her in death were six brothers, Willie Bolden, Eugene Bolden, Leonard Bolden, Charles Bolden, James Bolden and Thomas Bolden; four sisters, Marionette McDaniel, Annie Ruth McClinton, Dorothy Lee McKinnon, and Lillie Bell Luster. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Poem by Helen Bell
Our loved one has left us and taken flight;
Gone to be with the one with all Power and Might.
Many will follow and travel that way;
And we too will be singing Oh Happy Day.
We love her so much and hate to see her go;
But we will see her again and rejoice as before.
Services are incomplete at this time. Arrangements under the direction of McEwen Funeral Services, Charlotte, NC.
