Howard Thackston arrived Home on August 7, a date made even more meaningful as it was his beloved mother’s birthday and just four days after celebrating his 80th. He lived a fun-filled, God-honoring life with joy, purpose, and service. Nothing brought Howard greater happiness than helping others. Whether caring for his family, serving people locally or in other parts of the US, or serving people around the globe on mission trips. Howard’s heart for his family and others was boundless.
He was a friend to many, a mentor and coach to countless young people, a man of integrity, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1945 while his father was stationed there with the Navy, Howard faced early loss when his father passed away when he was seven. He was lovingly raised by his mother and grandfather, with the support of cherished aunts and uncles. His mother worked tirelessly to provide for her only son.
In 1955, Howard moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he would spend the rest of his life in the Charlotte area. A proud 1964 graduate of Garinger High School, he played football and wrestled. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967, and later earned an Associate Degree in Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration from CPCC. Howard dedicated his career to the HVAC field and retired from Mecklenburg County as a Mechanical Inspector.
Howard was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Charlotte for 30 years and later Calvary Church for 15 years. Fittingly, the celebration of his life will be held at Midwood Baptist Church—the same sanctuary where he and Sharyn were married 57 years ago.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharyn; his son, Eric (Kim); grandchildren Avery (Natalie), Chandler (Gabby), Bella, Cory, and Ariel; and great-grandchildren Bella, Suheily, Waylon, Myla, Paisley and soon to be born baby boy. He also leaves behind special cousins in North and South Carolina. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and many treasured aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Celebration of Life will be on August 23, 2025 at Midwood Baptist Church, 2029 Mecklenburg Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. Visitation: 2:00 PM Service: 3:00 PM
