

J. Vaughn Klutts, Sr., 84, passed away on November 25, 2015, at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Charlotte, NC, on July 22, 1931, to Reece Boyce Klutts and Clara Wentz Klutts. He attended Central High School in Charlotte and graduated in 1949. He graduated from Catawba College with a B.S. in Accounting in 1957.
He met the love of his life, Joy Waddell Klutts, of Tabor City, NC, in 1953 and the two were married August 27, 1955, at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Tabernacle in Charlotte.
He started his career in 1959 as a sales rep for the Ervin Company and took on roles of increasing responsibility at the firm over the next 13 years, and became Executive Vice-President in 1969. In 1972, he started Klutts Realty and Construction Company, specializing in residential homebuilding and real-estate sales. For 22 consecutive years he served on the executive committee of the North Carolina Home Builders Association. He was a Life Director of both the Charlotte and North Carolina Home Builder Associations. He served as Trustee, Vice President, and in 1972 as President of the Association. He continued his involvement as a National Representative, and Insurance Trustee. He was awarded Home Builder of the Year for both the Charlotte and the State of NC Associations. His company was recognized with Environmental Design Awards for six years running.
Klutts Homes was recognized as one of the top 400 builders in the nation in the Professional Builder Index of Housing Giants. In 1993, Klutts Homes was listed as #248 of the largest builder in the nation.
Mr. Klutts was an active member of the ARP Tabernacle in Charlotte where he served as a Chairman of the Board of Deacons, as an Elder, and on the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian Men’s Club. In later years, he worshipped alongside his wife at Pineville Church of the Nazarene in Pineville, NC, and was a member of the Open Door Sunday School Class.
He was an active member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Rams Club for many years and enjoyed traveling to attend Tarheel sporting events around the country with friends and family in tow.
After retirement, J. Vaughn and his wife spent much of their time at their vacation home in Cherry Grove, S.C. He loved being surrounded by family and friends and was an extremely welcoming host – inviting others to join him at his home, for travels, fishing, and family gatherings.
Mr. Klutts is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joy Waddell Klutts; his son, Barrett Waddell Klutts and his son J. Vaughn Klutts, Jr. and wife Vicki; his daughter, Julie Irene Klutts; his granddaughter, Victoria Klutts Sukhorukov and husband, Alex; his grandsons, J. Vaughn Klutts, III and Tyler Miles Klutts; and his brother Boyce Klutts.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Reece and Clara Klutts, his brother Henry Klutts, and best friend, Jack Todd.
J. Vaughn’s wife and children would like to thank Hospice & Palliative Care, Charlotte Region for their support during this time. The family would also like to thank Drs. John Sensenbrenner and John Pasquini for their long-time friendship and care for J. Vaughn.
The service to celebrate J. Vaughn Klutts’ life will be held Sunday, November 29th, at 2 p.m. at the Pineville Church of the Nazarene in Pineville, NC, with interment to follow at Magnolia Memorial Gardens at Calvary Church in Charlotte. The family will greet friends and family Saturday, November 28th, from 6-8 p.m. at the McEwen- Pineville Chapel at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte.
