Born October 15, 1943 in Charlotte, he was the son of the late John Philip Elting and the late Eleanor Abbott Elting. Jim graduated from Myers Park High School and attended UNC Charlotte. He was a proud Navy veteran having served aboard the USS Bushnell. Until retirement, he worked for IBM and Ceridian Employer Services as a computer operator. After retiring he was dedicated to researching and publishing the Elting family genealogy. Through his research, he contacted and talked with Eltings that the family had never met. He loved to play golf, he was an avid stamp collector, fostered many rescued puppies, and prior to his illness gathered daily with friends to exercise and enjoyed gathering with the “coffee club”.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Edith Houlihan “Edie” Elting, his loving son James Chadwick “Chad” Elting (Michelle), his first wife and Chad’s mother, Mary Jo Melvin Elting, grandson Luke Wesley Elting, sister Carol Richardson of Charlotte, brothers John Elting of Charlotte and Philip Elting of Cherry Hill, NJ. His brother Marshall Elting preceded him in death.
His loss is deeply mourned by his pet dog, Phoebe, and many good friends, neighbors, and thousands of Elting descendants around the world.
Jim will always be remembered as a good man with a kind heart and a keen sense of humor.
The family will receive friends to visit and celebrate his life on Sunday April 16, 2023, 3:00-5:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte.
