

Jim was born in Birmingham, AL on June 17, 1921 to the late James Ward Fitzpatrick and Ellen Barbara Vogtle Fitzpatrick. He grew up in the West End neighborhood of Birmingham where he attended West End high school and spent his summers at Rickwood Field, home of the Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team.
He earned two degrees from Auburn University in mechanical and industrial engineering. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and spent four years in the ROTC program.
Jim served in the 89th infantry division during WWII. His division overran Ohrdruf, a subcamp of Buchenwald concentration camp on April 4, 1945, the first concentration camp to be liberated by the U.S. Army. He earned a bronze star for his service.
He worked as a civil engineer for Monsanto in St. Louis, MO and later as an instructor at York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC.
Jim was a wonderful grandfather, mentor and friend to his grandchildren who fondly called him G-Daddy. He was an avid reader, stamp collector, baseball enthusiast and conversationalist.
He leaves behind his grandchildren, Allison Fitzpatrick (Banks Wood) and Patrick Fitzpatrick, both of Charlotte.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Horn Fitzpatrick and son James Ralph Fitzpatrick.
A celebration of his life will be held at the family home on March 23 at 4pm. Interment will follow in Bessemer, AL.
