He fought a valiant battle with metastatic colon cancer, with which he was diagnosed in early 2021.
Born to Ginger and Tommy Honeycutt in Rowan County, NC on March 20, 1980, James was a 1998 graduate of North Rowan High School. He also graduated from UNC-Charlotte.
James spent all of his working years in mechanical engineering, employed by US Airways, JetBlue, and then American Airlines. Along the way, he and his business partner Thomas Rood started their own engineering consulting company, Aviation Technology Associates, LLC (AvTech). They also bought a small airport with a flight school in Union County, NC (Goose Creek Airport), which proved to be fulfilling in untold ways for James.
Preceding James in death are his maternal grandparents Sarah and Bruce Sims, and his paternal grandparents Margie and James Honeycutt.
Left in bereavement to mourn his passing and cherish his memory are his beloved wife Corey, whom he married June 30, 2001, and their daughters Wrenn and Rowan of the home. James was a devoted Catholic husband and father who constantly sacrificed for the good of his family and made certain that prayer and holy reminders were mainstays in his home. He was a provider in all of the ways a man should be, uncompromising on leading his family with the principles and tenets of the Church. His wife and daughters will spend the rest of their days trying their best to honor him.
James will be deeply missed by many more. In addition to his parents, he leaves behind his sister, Kelly Kiefer (Mike) and two young nephews, an aunt, Rita Sims, an aunt, Nancy Trexler, an uncle Richard Honeycutt (Diane), his mother-in-law, Dana Kimmer (Brian), his father-in-law, Ken Yarbrough (Glendora), and his two business partners, Tom Rood and Chris Valant. Tom and his wife Lori were especially dear to James as he entrusted them to be his daughters’ godparents. Many aviation enthusiasts who filter in and out of 28A will wholeheartedly miss James. He is irreplaceable in every sense of the word.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church, 3635 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28209 on October 6, 2025 at 10:30 AM. Rite of committal will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 375 Lumen Christi Lane, Salisbury, NC, 28147. Father Timothy Reid will officiate.
The family respectfully requests silence once in the nave, and modest attire in black or dark colors in observance of the solemnity of the occasion.
In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ memory can be made to Birthright of Charlotte, MiraVia, or St. Ann Catholic Church, 3635 Park Rd., Charlotte.
