Born in Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Canada, to Edward Maxwell and Queenie Ileene Chappell, Jim was an avid athlete and excelled in both baseball and hockey. He had an 18 year hockey career and played in six different leagues that allowed him to travel from Canada to the US.
During the height of his hockey career, he moved from Pembroke to Charlotte to play for the newly formed, Eastern Hockey League’s, Charlotte Clippers that would later be known as the Charlotte Checkers. He retired from playing hockey after being traded, and playing three seasons with the Long Island Ducks. It was then that his wife, Joan, affectionately told him she was no longer willing to put up with the cold and they moved back to Charlotte. His abiding love for the game of hockey led him to become an official after he retired as a player.
After making his home in Charlotte, Jim successfully managed the Eastwood Gulf Service station. During his retirement, Jim enjoyed playing golf and reminiscing with friends, and of course, watching sports on TV.
Jim is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Joan Perrin and sister, Ilene Makins of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Shipp of Rocklin, California and will be loving remembered by his sons; Dean (Johnette), Shane, Cary, Chris and Brad as well as his grandchildren; Chris Price (Angie), Justin Bening, Joe Maxwell, Jordan Miller (Stephen), Tessa Roman (Michael) and Christina Maxwell-Morrison (Donald). He leaves behind several great-grandchildren as well.
A memorial service will be held at 4pm, on Saturday, May 22 at Wilson Funeral Home, 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte with Pastor Greg Baker officiating. Visitation will take place an hour prior to the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s honor, to the American Heart Association.
