

Jim, often called Jimmy, served in the Army for three years in World War II in Austria for the 222 Infantry Regiment where he was a section leader of multiple machine gun squads of 16 men. After his tour, he worked until his retirement from the Post Office in Charlotte where he was a mail sorter with supervisory responsibilities. He later joined up with Sharon View Credit Union where he was a loan officer for Celanese employees until he retired.
Jim was outgoing and loved people his whole life, especially his church and community.
He is predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Surratt, last year. Jim has three children: Michael (Elizabeth Ann), Susan (Robert Nichols), and Daniel Surratt. He was very proud of his grandsons: Jay (Elizabeth) Camp, Christopher Surratt, and David Surratt. He has two great grandchildren: Annabelle Camp and Lily Camp.
His family will receive friends on Sunday, November 9, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at the McEwen-Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, in Charlotte.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 10 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Blvd., Charlotte, NC. Reverend Bobby Morrow will officiate. Interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery.
