This man was a true gift. He is greatly missed. He loved his family like no other.

I am a friend of the Smigiel family.  I had the pleasure of meeting Javier on two occasions; his daughter Kate’s marriage to Justin Smigiel and at the funeral of Justin’s grandmother.  The very second you met Javier you could feel love, life and graciousness oozing out of him.  His love for his family was so evident in his smile and eyes whenever he spoke about them.  His life was a blessing to all.  My sincerest condolences on the loss of this amazing soul.

Nos encontramos profundamente conmovidos por la partida de Javier, a la vez elevamos nuestras oraciones por su eterno descanso.
Siempre lleno de bondad hacia sus semejantes, siempre presto a servir a quien se lo  solicitara, siempre con su mejor intencion. 
A su  hogar ejemplar, para su esposa e hijas los esposos de ellas y sus nietos siempre nuestro amor y comprension.

Queridos María Teresa y Marco, les acompaño con mi corazón y con mis oraciones. Aunque han pasado 30 y pico de años desde la última vez que vi a Javier, llevo muy dentro de mi el recuerdo de su sonrisa, esa sonrisa de alguien sincero y cariñoso que vivía demostrando esa alegría contagiosa que le caracterizaba. Aunque no nos hemos visto en tantos años siento que fue ayer que estábamos juntos. Vuela alto querido amigo, vuela alto a los brazos de nuestro Creador que veo serviste con amor. Descansa en Paz !!! 

To Maria (The Angel), and Marco, 
My memories of Javier are of the love that he had for his Angel wife Maria, his love for his brother Marco, his love for his daughters and grandchildren (he spoke of them often and of course showed many pictures), and the joy that he had working with all the customers. 
I would always tell him I was going to tell Maria on him for something I made up  or the time everyone at the Morton mill asked him about his white tennis shoes, and of course his love for his church always brought him home in time - I remember asking him if they had an Alter boy exchange program in MS so he could stay longer.
Javier was a light for all of us, one that will not go dim in time. His priorities where perfect - God, Family, and Friends.
Javier my friend / brother, you will not be forgotten, you will be missed.

To Maria and to Marco - my sincerest condolences to you and your families.  My favorite memory was traveling with Javier in the northeast just before a major winter storm and just before he and Marco were to travel back to Colombia to visit their mother.  Javier had no idea of the ice and snow that was about to hit (and cancel his flight back to CLT).  I offered to drive him back to my house where Maria would pick him up for the return to Charlotte.  We were late and our wives were gathered in my living room.  When we walked in the door, we knew they had been talking about us.........I will miss Javier.  Please take care and God bless.

Flaco, siempre fuiste un gran ejemplo a seguir, nunca conoci una falla o un enojo de tu parte. 
Le doy gracias a Dios por haberme permitido conocer una persona tan fantastica y tan completa en todos los sentidos. Te recuerdo siempre con alegria y con entusiasmo para ayudar a los demas sin importar ni esperar nada a cambio.
Creo que si el mundo tuviera mas Javier Varelas, definitivamente seria muchisimo mejor. Antes que perder un gran ser humano, hemos ganado un angel que nos cuida y nos guia desde el cielo.
Siempre te recordare de la mejor forma.

Maria, I remember like yesterday meeting you and Javier. Javier introduced himself and you as his beautiful wife Maria Teresa.. I knew that day how much he loved you and what a man, person, husband and father he was. I was so delighted to be a neighbor and friend. I will miss seeing his smile and him caring  about me ( when I was going through so much) even though he was going through so much too.. love, Marianne
