

She was born October 2, 1927 in Greensboro, NC. She was the middle child to the late Carl and Virgie Lashley. Jean loved wholeheartedly her family, friends and her church. Jean moved to Charlotte, NC in 1960. She joined Providence Baptist Church, and as a devoted Christian, she taught Sunday school well into her 80’s. Being very active included WMU, singing in the choir, VBS, tutoring children, feeding the homeless, the outreach program and Christian Women’s Club.
Jean cherished her work and friendship with Arthur Smith and family. Starting at Arthur Smith Recording Studio which welcomed a variety of artist. It was there that she became Doris of “Horace and Doris”, the adorable and funny puppet duo that played on local Charlotte commercials in the 80’s and early 90’s. Her work with Arthur Smith, outside of the studio, included assisting in hosting several fishing tournaments with locations spanning from Palm Beach, FL to NY, Myrtle Beach being the first, and boasts a large conservation impact.
Jean was widowed by husband, Edward “Ned” Hyman and later by Wallace “Wally” Nelms. She was also preceded in death by son, Robert “Buddy” Hyman; brother, Amos Lashley; sister, Rachel Wheeler; and grandson, Michael Broome.
She is survived by daughter, Jeanne (Michael) Broome of Woodstock, GA; daughter, Candi (Michael) Powell of Sumner, WA; son, Edward (Tina) Hyman of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Mandy (Christopher) Cheesman of Woodstock, GA, Eydie (Gregg) Bibik of Lancaster, SC, Kendall Hyman and Max Hyman of Charlotte, NC; and great grandchildren, Lucas, Avery, Grant, Griffin and Greer.
