

Jesse was born on September 12, 1939 in Greenville, NC to Luther Cabel Powell and Elaine Pierce Powell. He received his Bachelor's degree from East Carolina University in 1961 and he earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1963. He began his career teaching and then later moved into sales. He retired from TheraQuip of Greensboro.
Jesse met his wife, Ingrid Cooper, while at East Carolina and they married in 1963. They lived in Chapel Hill briefly and then moved to Charlotte, where they raised their three children. Jesse and Ingrid moved to Wilson, NC in 1988 where they lived until 2019 when they moved back to Charlotte to be closer to family.
Throughout his life, Jesse was very active in the Presbyterian Church. Over the years, he was a member of Albemarle Road Presbyterian, First Presbyterian in Wilson, and most recently Calvary Church of Charlotte. While at Albemarle Road and First Presbyterian he held various church offices including Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session. He was also a Youth Leader and an adult Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Jesse enjoyed fishing, music, history, travel, gardening, and Tarheel basketball. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers; Luther Cabel Powell, Thomas Powell and Charles Powell. He is survived by his wife, Ingrid C. Powell; daughters Ingrid P. Hunter (Patrick) of Charlotte, Lisa P. Ryan (Charlie) of Annapolis, MD, and son Jesse W. Powell, Jr. (Kylene) of Greenwood, SC; seven grandchildren, Sophia M. Hunter, Elisabeth P. Hunter, Charlotte A. Ryan, Annelise I. Ryan, Emma K. Powell, Olivia A. Powell, and Jesse W. Powell, III.
A service will be held at a later date at Calvary Church. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care - Charlotte Region.
