Charlotte - Joan Ellen Moring Anderson, 76, passed away on March 12, 2014 after a 6 year courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Platte Boyd Moring and Lota Couk Moring. She was born in Greensboro on Sept. 23rd, 1937, and spent a wonderful childhood with her siblings and parents on Woodbine Court. Joan was known to many as “Sweet Joan” or “Sweet Butch” or “Butchie,” a nickname her brother Platte gave her as a young girl. Joan attended Greensboro High School and loved being involved in activities and being with friends, participating in the Orchestra, Bible Club, The F.T.A Club, the Mariners and Les Soeurs. She was also a May Day Attendant and Whirligig Cheerleader. Greensboro High School is also where she met her husband, Joseph Bradley Anderson, who she was married to for 16 years.
Joan moved to Charlotte in the 1960’s and called this home for almost 50 years. She worked at Connecticut Mutual/Mass Mutual/Lincoln Financial until retirement. She raised her children in Charlotte and met many wonderful friends that she absolutely cherished, including her best friend, Janet Bittinger, who was there for her always. Joan was also a very active Bridge player, and loved to be outdoors and working in her yard and garden. She really looked forward to trips with her “mountain friends,” and loved her annual beach trips with her children and grandchildren. She got really worked up watching the Tar Heels play, and also the Carolina Panthers. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, including a trip to El Salvador to build homes, and was an active member of Carmel Presbyterian Church.
“Butch” loved her siblings so much and was the last of what everyone knew as “The Moring Sisters” who are the late Martha May Lauten, Betty Ann Wade, Judith Moring Hudson, and Mary Jane Montgomery.
Her joy was her family and to them she meant everything. She is survived by her brother, Platte Boyd Moring, Jr., of Myrtle Beach, SC; and her two children: Gregory Scott Anderson of Dallas, TX and his wife, Gail, and Amy Anderson Volpe of Durham, NC and her husband, Rocco. She truly enjoyed and lived for her grandchildren: Ashlyn Bailey Anderson (17), Kelleigh Madelyn Anderson (15), Ainsley Anderson Volpe (4), and Ellen Elizabeth Volpe (2).
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held Friday, March 21, 2014 at 2 pm at Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Rd., Charlotte, NC 28226. The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to: The American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity or Carmel Presbyterian Church.
