John “Marty” Marshall McKeever Sr, 58, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away on March 22, 2025, in Charlotte, NC. Marty was born May 27, 1966, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Joe and Margaret McKeever.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a child and re-committed himself to the Lord near the end of his life.
Marty came of age in Columbus, Mississippi, where he graduated from Stephen D. Lee High School in 1984. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg but decided that life’s adventures promised a better education than more schooling.
Marty cut his own unique path through life, working as a tugboat deckhand on the Mississippi River, a chef and restaurant operator, and as a self-taught web designer/coder who rose to the level of Senior Software Consultant. He belonged to drama troupes and enjoyed art, travel, road trips, finding the latest eclectic sounds and sharing new music with friends and like-minded strangers, local live bands, hunting, fishing, extensive reading in a multitude of genres, sushi, sweater vests, band T-shirts and good conversations with opposing positions that were well articulated. Marty loved his family and took great pride in his children’s academic, artistic, and musical abilities.
Marty had a soft spot for marginalized people who were not mainstream. He was generous with his time and resources, applying Deuteronomy 15:7-8 to his life: “You shall not harden your heart or shut your
hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need.”
In his middle age, Marty fell in love with a Texas gal who loved him faithfully and served him tirelessly as his strength diminished. They were married on January 6, 2025.
He is survived by his wife Tara McKeever; his two grown children, Darilyn McKeever and Jack “Aura” McKeever; his father, Joe McKeever; his sister, Carla Jinoke Peters; his brother, Neil McKeever; plus an extended family and many friends.
Marty’s mother, Margaret Henderson McKeever, preceded him to Heaven.
A private memorial service will be held for the family.
