John Moyle, of Charlotte, NC, born on March 2, 1924, passed away peacefully at Emeritus at SouthPark on January 4, 2013, after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Harry and Bryant, 500 Providence Road, in Charlotte, on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The Reverend Terry Hammill, Pastor Emeritus of Mouzon United Methodist Church, will preside. Burial will be private at Sharon Memorial Park.
A Charlotte native, John, known at Technical High School as “Mack,” graduated from Tech High in 1943. He was Captain and sometimes-coach of the football team, and played a significant role in the 1942 Shrine Bowl game against South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theater. Upon his discharge, he entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a degree in business administration.
For 32 years, until his retirement, he was a star salesman with The Andrew Jergens Company, traveling North and South Carolina, regaling his customers with funny stories, and a great deal of kidding. John became a member of Mouzon United Methodist Church in 1951 with his late wife, Verda, and his influence as a Sunday school teacher, particularly of the youth there, stretched over many years. His step-children, Carol King and her brother, Forrest King, were guided in their childhood by his tough challenge of memorizing Bible verses for the many prizes he would hand out. Long after these Sunday school classes were over, these verses remain forever lodged in his students’ memory.
John was a Mason, belonging to Joppa Lodge, and a Shriner, being a member of Oasis Temple. He was an exceptional dancer, and quite the snappy dresser. John was a terrific handyman, and his church was the beneficiary of many hours of his hard work, painting rooms and landscaping the grounds.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Louise Wood Moyle and John Ollie Moyle; his sisters, Nell Manning, Betty Jean James, Mary Faye Jenkins and Anna Louise Musser; and his brothers, Jack Oliver Moyle and James Maxie Moyle.
John is survived by his loving wife, Frances, whom he had known over the years at Mouzon, and whom he married in 1980. He is also survived by his grateful step-children, Carol King and her brother, Forrest King (Jenna); his adored step-granddaughter, Leslie King, whom he lovingly called “Sweet Pea” from birth; his dedicated sister-in-law, Kathryn Moyle; and several nieces and nephews.
The family is deeply grateful to the staff at Emeritus at SouthPark for their loving and abiding care of John during his time there, particularly to Emma Williams and Darlenda Anderson.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital, Greenville, South Carolina or to the donor’s choice.
