It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph "Joe" Petruk, a beloved member of his family, who was born on April 14th, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan. Joe's earthly journey came to a peaceful conclusion on March 26th 2024, at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Throughout his life, Joe touched the lives of many with his kindness, dedication, and unwavering love. As we gather to honor his memory, we reflect on the profound impact he made during his time with us.
Joe devoted over three decades of his professional life to IBM, where he made significant contributions that garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious President's Award. While Joe received recognition for his outstanding work at IBM, his true passion lay in teaching. Renowned as one of the finest instructors in IBM Learning Services history, Joe was also considered one of the most respected AARP driving instructors well into his retirement years. During his tenure as an AARP instructor, he honorably served as the Arkansas State Coordinator for several years.
Joe's commitment to service extended beyond his career, as evidenced by his receipt of the Angels Hero Award from Blue Cross Blue Shield in 1999 and his tenure as Grand Knight and Knight of the Year with the Knights of Columbus at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas. As well as being a Knight for over 16 years, Joe was an active member of St. John's Pastoral Council and graciously served many roles throughout his Church life.
In addition to his years with IBM, AARP and the Knights of Columbus, Joe was a proud veteran, serving with extinction as a member of the United States Navy until his honorable discharge on February 5th, 1960. As a Navy man, Joe was a Korean War veteran where he served as a radioman aboard the USS Hornet. He was known to brag about his time spent in the Navy, specifically dealing with his radio skills.
At an early age, Joe was “hooked” on fishing, finding solace and joy in the waters across the country. Fishing became a lifelong pursuit that brought him immense happiness which he shared with anyone willing to cast a line alongside him.
In addition to his professional and personal pursuits, Joe was a cherished husband, married to his beloved wife Agnes for 64 years until her passing. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and kindness to anyone who was lucky enough to know him. His example of what a husband, father, grandfather and friend should be, will live on through those whose heart has been touched along the almost 91 years he graced this earth.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Petruk Sr., and Josephine Petruk; his wife, Agnes Petruk; and his granddaughter, Jennifer Petruk. He is survived by his brothers, James Petruk and Daniel Petruk; his three loving children, Steve (Lindsey) Petruk, Tom (Linda) Petruk, and Sue (Monte Coon) Meyers; eight grandchildren, Crystal (Laramie) McMurty, Ryan Petruk, Erin (Greg) Reiter, Kelsey Estrada, Shawn (Caroline) Petruk, Tony (Rachel) Meyers, Daniel (Kelly) Meyers, and James (Amanda) Meyers; and 13 great-grandchildren who will cherish his memory forever.
A funeral service to celebrate Joe's remarkable life will be held on April 11th, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy, Charlotte, NC 28277.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Heart Association reflecting Joe's spirit of generosity and compassion.
Joe's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited with his beloved wife, fishing in the waters of heaven.
