An accomplished author, gifted English professor, and deeply cherished mother and grandmother, Karon was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, on February 3, 1954, to Cecil and Frances Gleaton.
Karon’s life was a testament to both creativity and reinvention. After a successful 25-year career in the tech industry with Honeywell and Apple, she underwent a mid-life renaissance, earning a Masters in Creative Writing from Queens University in 2005. She then embarked on a second career as an author, publishing her critically acclaimed debut novel Spelldown in 2007, along with a poetry collection, Wolf Heart. A sequel novel, Bewilderment of Boys, followed in 2014. In parallel to her writing career, Karon taught creative writing at UNC Charlotte for 12 years, nurturing a new generation of literary voices.
Without question, Karon’s greatest joy was her family. She had an extraordinary gift for making her loved ones feel cherished, a gift that multiplied when she became "Nana" to Grayson, Genevieve, and Luca. These grandchildren were a guiding light in her life, and she was an unwavering presence in theirs, filling their young minds with curiosity, creativity, and a love of language.
Karon is survived by her devoted husband of 36 years, Tom Luddy; daughter, Charlotte Reeves Bowman (Todd); and son, David Luddy (Lisa); three treasured grandchildren, Grayson Bowman, Genevieve Bowman, and Luca Luddy. She is also survived by siblings, Cecil Gleaton Jr., Dennis Gleaton, Sandra Catoe, and Wanda Armstrong, as well as lifelong friend Sharon Frazier. Karon is now reunited with both parents and her brother, Jeffery Gleaton.
A memorial service to celebrate Karon's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 7th, 2025, at Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, immediately followed by a reception for friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Roof Above (www.roofabove.org), an organization committed to ending homelessness in our community. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of The Sanctuary at Glenridge for their compassionate care.
