It is with great sorrow to learn of my dear friend Karen passing from our mortal realm. Her genuine warmth, humanity and joyous presence was revealed so many years past when I first met her at one of Jeff White's wonderful soirees. Thankfully many more ensued over the years, and I cherish those memories. She and Tom, and other lifelong friends from that time in my life, remain in my heart even after being away from them for so many years. I wish to extend all my condolences to Tom, their family and loved ones. I am uplifted by learning so much about Karen's literary achievements, and her various important contributions, and with no surprise. Karen, you will always be in my heart, and greatly missed.

Karon and I shared so many hugs at the back fence.  We laughed and cried together during heartbreak and happy times.  Her smile is missed, but her spirit will always be  in our hearts.

Just heard the sad news about Karon. We saw her this summer to help celebrate Tom's birthday and she was in good spirits. She was a kind soul and her life shared with everyone who knew her brought happiness and light. She will be missed greatly and our hearts extend our sorrow to Tom and his family. Karen & Tim Cohen

I knew Karon from her days at UNC Charlotte.  For more than ten years, she taught creative writing courses in UNC Charlotte's English Department.  During this time, she wrote her debut novel, Spelldown. which deals with a girl from a small town in South Carolina who competes in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. I was so impressed with Karon's novel that I invited her to appear as a keynote speaker at the Children's Literature Association Conference, which I co-chaired. This conference took place in Charlotte in 2009, and Karon made us all proud as a local author who achieved national success, just as her character does in Spelldown.

I was privileged to know Karon at Olde Providence Racket Club where Tom and Karon are members . I attended a book club meeting over which Karon presided and enjoyed very much her enthusiasm. I’ll miss seeing her in the gym at OP.

What can I say about Karon? She was a wonderful person to be around. One of my classmates during the Queens MFA, she was a bright star in our somewhat rag-tag group. A talented, passionate writer, I was grateful that we stayed in touch after we graduated from the program. I loved her first book, Spelldown, and I was thrilled to work with her a bit on her follow up to that book, Bewilderment of Boys. Post MFA, we also laughed together about how she love, loved, loved teaching at UNCC while I only lasted one semester. 
She worked with my great good friend Cindy Campbell to promote her books and these two got along so well—I was thrilled. Together, Karon and I mourned Cindy’s passing some years later.
I am sorry that we fell out of touch in more recent years as other aspects of our lives intervened. But I will always be glad that we were friends and will carry the memory of her smile with me always.

Look at the excitement in my mother’s eyes as she speaks at one of her book signings.

My mom was the best cook. I can't count how many thousands of meals she prepared for me over the years, but I know I loved every single one.

What a great example these two set for me on what it means to be a true partner in life. They have a fantastic love story.

She loved her grandchildren so much, and we all loved being silly with her and making her laugh.

Karon was the kind of friend anyone would be blessed to have because she was always positive, and saw beauty and real joy in life. 
Her innocent comments sometimes stopped me in my tracks and she never realized how much she lifted me (& others).   Karon was never shy to speak lovingly about her family.  And to all who know Tom & Karon, there is no doubt that they were soulmates. They loved and took care of each other to the nth degree. 
Karon embodied Philippians 4:8 and I will always remember her in this way with love.  I am so grateful she was in my life,  and I  wish all her family & our friends God's peace and  consolation.

During my last visit to Charlotte in January 2016, I had a lovely lunch with Karon and Vickie. We were good friends in the 1980s.  Karon was a kind and generous person who was easy to love. RIP

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends Karon left behind. I met her over 50 years ago and we shared ( along with my sister Cindy and a mutual friend to all of us, Gayle) many fun times as teenagers. Beach trips, sleepovers, or just cruising up and down Main St in Lancaster.  I had not seen her since one of her book signings at the Lancaster Library but have no doubt we would have picked right up as long time friends. My prayers are with you as you mourn her loss.

Such lovely memories of our travels to Greece, Croatia, Turkey & Italy 2019. She will be remembered.
