Born on February 13, 1954 in Charlotte to the late Guy Lee Hunter and Margaret Hanna Hunter, Larry was raised on the west side and later called Mt. Holly home. A graduate of West Mecklenburg High School, Larry was awarded school bus driver of the year. He worked for Royster Purina Company, LeeBoy Manufacturing Company, and was a mechanic all his life.
Larry's love for cars and racing found him at Shuffletown Dragway's quarter mile on race days and speeding down the streets of Huntersville, Mooresville, and Charlotte. Larry made his film debut running from the pitstop in the movie The Last American Hero based on the life of Junior Johnson.
His love of cars was second only to his love of his family and friends. He was a devoted son, grandson, big brother, uncle, great uncle, nephew, friend, and neighbor. Larry was a great conversationalist and storyteller, and he never met a stranger. He loved his late pets, Gal and Doobie; feline companions, Spike and Snowball; and Timmy the turtle. Larry was one of a kind.
Larry is survived by his brother, Timothy Scott Hunter (Lynette Langford) of Charlotte; sister, Amy Elizabeth Stewart (HD) of Banner Elk; nephews, Christopher Hunter of Charlotte, Christopher Kilgannon of Sacramento, CA, and Dylan Hunter and Austin Hunter, both of Charlotte; niece, Sarah Kilgannon of Charlotte; great nieces and nephews, Rhyder, Kendall, Laynie, Avril, Atianna, Bryson, and Bailey; and friends, Sonny Harrison, Billy Burke, Dean Sutton, Bobby Baucom, Ronnie Hollar, Frankie Flannigan, Jim Paxton, and Mike Presnell.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Sandy Ford Freewill Baptist Church, 615 Sandy Ford Road in Mt. Holly. Due to limited parking, the family kindly asks that attendees carpool if possible.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Larry's memory to The Gaston Humane Society or Speedway Children's Charities.
