

Lewis Marcum Townsend died October 19th at about 5 PM after a day of doing what he loved to do, at a place he wanted to be, on the last day of his life, on land his grandfather had built a little house near a creek from which they drew water. Years later, he had raised a family along the next creek less than a 100 yards away.
Lewis’s parents were Wiley and Floy Orr Townsend. He was born on September 23, 1917 in Pisgah Forest, NC.
On October 26, 1945, he and Virginia Dare Dalton were married at the Lewisville Methodist Church. They are the parents of Marcia Gills and Debra Webb.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Marcia Gillis and sisters, Nettie Lawler and Belle Carter.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia, daughter, Debra Webb and husband Bob of Charlotte; 3 grandsons, Alan Webb of Washington, DC, Darin Gillis and wife Quantina of Hummelstown, PA, Marc Gillis and wife, Laura of Winston-Salem; granddaughter, Laura Webb of Durham; great granddaughter, Heidi Gillis; niece, Rhuemma Carter Miller; grand niece, Christy Suddeth and husband Chris, and grand niece, Emma Bell Suddeth.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 23 at Covenant United Methodist Church with Rev. David Lee officiating. Interment will follow the service in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 9:30 AM.
