

She was born November 25, 1926, in Burlington, NC, daughter of the late William Alvis and Martha Davis Lea. She was the youngest of six children, with five beloved older brothers who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Taylor retired from teaching school after over 20 years in the Charlotte, Burlington and High Point systems, with 3rd grade being her specialty. In the early 1960s, she participated for two years in the prestigious U.S. Army program teaching children of embassy officials in Bad Godesberg, Germany. Mrs. Taylor attained her Bachelor of Arts degree at Greensboro College followed by a Master’s degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was active over the years in the Fellowship Class, Martha Circle and United Methodist Women at Myers Park United Methodist Church, Robinson Woods Garden Club and Friends of the Mint. She also enjoyed her docent volunteer work for a number of years at the Mint Museum leading groups on informative art exhibit tours.
Mrs. Taylor was a gracious, spirited and loving wife and mother who always had a welcoming smile and kind word. Her Christian faith was very important to her, and she cherished family and friends above all.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, where she was a member for over 40 years. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside committal service will also be held at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington, NC, on Thursday, September 1, 2011.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband, William David Taylor, of Charlotte; daughter, Laura Lea Taylor, of Charlotte; three nieces: Joan Lea Jordan (Bill) of Mechanicsville, MD, Judy Lea Ritchie (Joe) of Glade Valley, NC, and Diane Lea Hutchins (John) of Clifton, VA; three nephews: John Davis Lea, Jr. and Joseph Durham Lea (Ramona), both of Burlington, NC, and James Donald Moore of Longs, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gordon Graves Lea Memorial Scholarship at Greensboro College, Development Office, 815 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
