

Fred was born in Fort Wayne, IN to Malcolm F. and Margurite B. Locke on June 30, 1940. He was a graduate of Decatur High School, class of 1958. Fred went on to attend Indiana University and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1962 and a MBA in 1965.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and was on active duty from 1962-1964. Fred was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1968.
Fred began his career as an Executive Recruiter in Charlotte and went on to found his own company, Locke and Associates. He served as owner and president until he retired in 1999.
Fred married the love of his life, Leslie Freedland Locke on November 24, 1968 and they were married for 44 years before she preceded him in death on April 1, 2013. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Nothing gave him more pleasure than spending time with his grandchildren, Charley and Burke.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Locke Denny, and two grandchildren, Charley Denny (15) and Burke Denny (10). Also surviving are his sister, Judith L. Mallers, Indianapolis, IN; his brother-in-law, Martin B. Freedland and his wife Judy of Atlanta, GA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, all from Indiana.
Fred was a member of Temple Beth El, Carmel Country Club and a resident of Rosewood Condominiums. He was so appreciative and thankful for his generous and kind caregivers, Gladys, Carole and Cerita, for making his last months comfortable. Fred was also so thankful for Bernice Williamson for her years of loyalty and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Charlotte S. Freedland Cancer Research Fund c/o Carolinas Healthcare Foundation, 208 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Charlotte Latin School in honor of his beloved grandchildren, 9502 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28277.
Graveside services will be private. A memorial service is being planned for the month of August.
